Wandering Guardians

The subject of many folk tales across Lutherios, the wandering guardians are beings who have existed alongside mortals for an incredibly long time. They're spoken of fondly due to their benevolent and whimsical nature. They are the manifestation of hope and the will to live, often appearing as a scruffy mutt. While they're not a common sight, some places see a higher occurrence of these spirits than others. In areas that have seen a prominent loss of life due natural disasters or hazardous terrain, travelers are bound to encounter at least one of these guardians.   They're dedicated to helping travelers who are in need, such as those who find themselves lost or injured. Wandering guardians tend to stay off the beaten path, tucking themselves away in thickets of plants unless they sense danger. It's even said that they can predict natural disasters; saving people from landslides or leading them to shelter before a terrible storm hits. The spirits were once a reclusive species, but opened up after a rise in respect and kindness towards them.   Shrines to the spirits are built in fallen trees or placed upon stumps or large rocks. Many offer dried herbs, small dishes of berries, lucky coins, or crystals. Other ways people pay their respects is marking directions to food, shelter, and water for other travelers. While wandering guardians can be summoned by those with magic, they're not beholden to the caster. This doesn't present a problem most of the time given that they're summoned to help lead or find things. On the off chance that a caster expects more from them, the spirit will either help them to the best of their ability or simply leave.   While a dog is the most common form the wandering guardians take, other known forms include owls or donkeys.
