The trees planted by a poor knight as a token of love. The woman he wish to marry was a social better and her father refused the proposal, forbidding the wedding. Accomplishing many quests, participating in jousts and tournaments, and serving lords as a hedge knight and sometimes mercenary he returned 15 years later.
His love did not have his luxury of waiting, she was promised to another lord months after the knight had left. She did walk through the trees, with her three children before dying in childbirth with her fourth child.
When he found out this news, he took out his Dirk cutting his hair, trying it in the ribbon she gave him as a parting token all those years ago.
He rode off, never to return and never learning that she named her first child after him. It was rumored that this child was the poor knights.
From Nave to the choir the trees with vines winding up, the branches arched touching in the middle. Two hundred years later the cathedral forest is a masterpiece as well as a monument for love. Those courting, or in love stroll the forest together, hand in hand.
