Rooftop ceremony
High on religious structures are perched gargoyles and grotesques, most stare motionless frozen in place. Statues stiiling for hundreds of years. But there are some who are awake, they rest during the day like their stone, quartz and marble counterparts.
When a grotesque does awaken it is a rare and special occasion. Sometimes there are a hundred years between awakening. Sometimes there are a few in one night. Awakenings are random. Storms, meteor showers or other celestial events such as northern lights seem to cause them. No one has been able to predict when or exactly why one awakens.
To fully be accepted into the unkindness the newly awoken grotesques must pass an initiation known as the Coy Hunt. The details of the quest is determined in a rooftop ceremony on the first full moon after the grotesques has awakened.
As the moon breaks the nights horrizon the ugly creatures scamper and crawl off their day time perches and pedestals gathering on the rooftop of their church. Candles stolen from the church below are lite. The flickering orange light playing off their faces making them even more horrible.
Also pilfered from the city, sage sweet grass braids are lit. The smoke obscuring their cloves feet to their knees giving the impression that they are floating. They form two disorganized rows with a rough aisle in the middle. They push and shove and strain their necks to see the newly awaken one walking towards a large leather book, a tall candle and a bell.
The newly awoke one lights the bee's wax candle. In the candle light they open the book. It's an ancient book containing a list of grotesques each with a dramatic portrait of each member of the unkindness. A simple red line over those that failed their initiation test. They confirm that it is their portrait. A bell is rung signaling for the devil bones (dice) are brought forward. An initial single die roll decides home many dice will next be rolled. This next roll determines how many Coys (coins) they have to find in the city to fully belong to the unkindness.
Closing the ceremony the book is closed, the bell is rung and the candle is snuffed out. Silently the unkindness file away into the night leaving the new member alone. The Coy hunt must be completed by the next full moon.
