Vassal

One who swears fealty to a liege lord. All knights and nobles (except the king) are the vassal of someone else. All nobles, and many knights, are also the liege of those knights whom they have enfoeffed with manors. Note that peasants do not swear fealty, so are not vassals (though they may be tenants).
