The Pact of Love

The Pact of Love is a love letter written by Zathrian Krahn intended for Aoife, the Aegrican monk who traveled to Mescar as a member of Llwgwaed.

Historical Details

Background

Although the letter was written to completion and in it's original envelope, it was found unopened in the rubble of the upper towers of Karsah-Kryzee. When opened by Mâriann Krahn, the date on the letterhead only preceded the author's death by three weeks.

Public Reaction

When the letter was found, the Mescrian government, headed by Mâriann Krahn, tried to hush up it's discovery due to the public opinion of the former prince. Despite their efforts, word spread of the document and eventually everyone knew of this secret letter. The general public was surprisingly reverent of the note and found it to be of pure quality and good will. It was permanently given to Aoife Mesukah, the addressee, a month after it's opening. The document was named The Pact of Love after the line, 'I pray this letter will be received with an equally tender nature as I have expressed and this revelation of true adoration and care can be transformed into a pact of love which will outlast even the halls of this mighty fortress.'

Legacy

The Pact of Love is now a cultural symbol of the good in every person. Since the letter was written by the prince who turned against his country, not of his own will, it rings true to the citizens of Mescar as a testament to the power of love in any heart. The term 'Pact of Love' has since been coined in Mescrian slang as a way to say one does not know if someone shares a regard of love with another person (i.e. 'She wrote him a pact of love last week')

Dearest Aoife,

I shall be leaving on a 'call-to-arms' tour tonight in which I will be rousing our local militant forces around the kingdom in order that we may face Uttarah with as large of a force as we can muster. If we should chance encounter Uttarah on the roads home, I may not return to Karsah-Kryzêe. If this is indeed the last word you ever hear from me, I pray you will forgive me if I cause you any trouble. I write this to tell you of my love for you since I have no time to tell you myself. I wish I could so i may see your face and know if you too feel the same for me. Even though I will be away for a time and war may follow me home on the heels, I am confident I may see you in life again and at that time I can present myself to you in person to convey my testimony of adoration. I wonder if while I am gone if you will feel the way I do when I see you leave on a patrol. When you leave through the gate in the morning, I wish I were there beside you so I may know you will return again soon. In the lonely hours when you are gone, I pray fervently to Penthar you are not abandoned on some track in the Hoêkbowvls wasting away and wonder if you too feel the same loneliness for me when I am abroad, as I am about to do. If you should say you have other bonds and duties and I should see to my own obligations with similar persistence, I should say: do we not both have a duty to ourselves as well? And if you say I am not genuine in my appeal, I say: here I am before you; my heart has been poured out onto this page. I care so deeply for you Aoife, I hope my regard is not unwanted, for if it is I will be sure to retract that which was improper. I pray this letter will be received with an equally tender nature as I have expressed and this revelation of true adoration and care can be transformed into a pact of love which will outlast even the halls of this mighty fortress.
