"...and so down they went, spiraling out of control. They clung to their seats, bracing themselves to slam into the water below."
A Childrens' Story
Lament Landing is a story told to children, but is mostly prevelant on the fringes of the galaxy. The story explores two survivors of a crash landing on an unexplored planet. According to the story, the two, Marlin and Baker, washed up on a shore and met an intelligent alien race. Though they couldn't understand each other, the aliens weren't immediately hostile and tended to the survivor's wounds.
Tale of Treachory
While the two humans slowly learned how to live within this small alien society. The aliens came to like the humans and started to include them in their social circles. One day, a group of outcast aliens asked Baker about his pistol, which he kept at his side. After demonstrating its power, the outcasts convinced Baker he should take over. They snuck into the leader aliens hut at night, killed him, and set fire to his home.
THE TRUE STORY
The true story behind Lament Landing is even more tragic than the childrens' tale. A ship did crash on an unexplored planet but the crew was supposed to be the first exploration team. They landed far to their intended campsite and indeed only two crew members lived through the crash. As they attempted to survive on an unknown island with no way of signalling home, they were forced to attempt and find edible plants. Although they discovered a plant that was edible, they had no way of knowing it also had severe hallucenigenic properties. They two fought, with one killing the other before killing themself.
"Only two survived, awaking on a beach with no sign of their ship or crew."
Two Friends, Now Enemies
Excited about his newly usurped position, Baker rushed to tell Marlin. Marlin was furious, stating that the aliens were providing all they needed and there was no reason to kill their leader. The two began to fight, and in anger, Baker shot Merlin. As Baker calmed, he began to regret his actions and decided to rest. Once he fell asleep, the aliens who had convinced him to take over killed him, taking control for themselves.
