Azna
Azna’s story begins truly with her parents. The thieving kobold Asnir met the dragonborn Jakar when she found him robbing her laboratory. Rather than call the authorities, the dragonborn would let the kobold have some of her tools if he would help her “borrow” more materials from rival artificers and colleges. This relationship would bloom over the years into a partnership that led Asnir and Jakar into an underbelly of crime, secrets, and adventure across the Kingdom. When Jakar revealed her pregnancy, both she and Asnir agreed it was time to settle down somewhere and get themselves out of their smuggling and thieving business before it caught up to them. They had made many enemies along the way and were often on the cusp of being caught or killed. The two settled on Broken Bow in the province of Cord Ea Lorin, hoping to hide their former lives under the guise of a modest fishing business.
Jakar gave birth to Azna, whom they called their beloved daughter and hoped to raise to be better than them both. Azna was well cared for in their earliest years, but the couple found trouble with their business and were not great at keeping up with the competition. As a result, some weeks they would be forced to scrape by with little money or food. Azna didn’t care at first, they were just happy to be read stories of dangerous adventure and learn new skills from their parents.Asnir couldn’t help but turn back to his old ways so he could feed his family. He began making connections to smuggling businesses and helping them run shipments on the side to make money to help raise their child. Jakar was not thrilled but couldn’t argue that they needed the money. She requested that he make a few textbooks, tools, and magical supplies “go missing” from time to time so she could start back to tinkering and give Azna an education.
Eventually Azna grew tired of the label “daughter” and told their parents it wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t encompass their feelings on themselves. The two were happy to make the change for their growing child, hoping this would give them more confidence and joy. Asnir had become a full-fledged smuggler within a short period, using his skills to slowly fund Azna’s growth and give his wife the tools to teach her new skills and lessons. The young kobold was eager to learn from their mother, and quickly took to the scientific applications to the arcane their mother taught. The family was finally making some real progress, escaping the clutch of poverty, and finding ground as a unit.
On a family trip out on the sea, disaster struck. A sudden squall took them all by surprise and rocked their small fishing boat against the choppy and relentless seas. As the small craft took on water and began to be battered by wind and ocean force, pieces of the boat started to crack and break under the strain. Though they were quick on their feet, Azna’s parents were still bested by the fury of the storm. Asnir was split from the group as the boat broke from cracks across the bow and deck, but Jakar could see the piece she and her child were now floating upon was doomed. Refusing to let her child drown, she mustered her strength and tossed Azna to her husband across the stormy seas. Azna and their father watched tearfully as Jakar drifted further away on the sinking section of the boat until she fell out of sight.
While Azna and Asnir were lucky enough to wash up on shore, they would never see Jakar again. No reports of a dragonborn washing to shore came through save for the occasional small piece of driftwood or sail from the craft. Their terrible descent into deep depression did little to stave off the swift and merciless jaw of poverty once more. The inactivity brought on by tragedy and loss of his partner meant Asnir had little means of taking care of himself and Azna. Many months were spent scrounging by for scraps and making tough calls to secure their survival. Azna watched as they grew skinnier and more haggard with each passing day. Azna descended into a void of nihilism, denial, and resistance as the loss of their mother turned their life upside down. The young kobold began to act out, sleep terrible hours, and disappear for stretches of time. Friends were few and far between, as the rebel kobold refused to let outsiders into their life. New piercings and tattoos would randomly appear on the kobold from time to time as tokens of their turn to rebellion.
Eventually Asnir grew restless watching his child spiral and told Azna it was time to teach them the tools of the smuggling trade. Azna finally started to come around out of their despair and found new inspiration in illegal activities, having lost all faith in the system at large within the Kingdom. The two would spend many nights in the dark training and honing their skills of subterfuge. When Asnir returned to his smuggling jobs, Azna joined him. Together they would become quite a force in the underbelly of Broken Bow. More and more clients wanted to have them retrieve contraband or push products out of the hands of one business into theirs. On their off-time, Azna never stopped practicing the teachings their mother gave them on artificing. Every day for the young kobold would be spent tinkering in the day and ending with smuggling at night.
Out of the blue one day, Asnir came to Azna in a frantic state and assured his child how much he loved them. He told Azna that there was a situation that he had to take care of by himself and that he didn’t know if he would be back. Despite protestations from Azna, he assured them that they were ready to face the world. He handed them a strange looking cryptex and instructed them to keep it safe and never let anyone know they had it. Then like a shadow into the night, Asnir vanished with a small sack of belongings never to return. Azna thought for so many months that they would see their father again, but no word ever came. Losing another parent only made the kobold more reckless in their work, taking more dangerous jobs and outright robbing some places without being contracted. They had also mastered their mother’s teachings on artificing, going so far as to begin a prototype of an automaton companion. Failure after failure meant piles of scrap and broken steel into the late hours of night, but the kobold continued. After months of work, Azna had finished their steely lizard guardian “Jackass,” named wryly after combining bits of their parents’ names Jakar and Asnir.
After establishing themself as not only an exceptional artificer but also a competent smuggler, Azna caught the curious eye of some pirates. The kobold was confused how they had ended up in Broken Bow when they claimed to come from the Crag but was happy to work with them if it meant good coin, roughhousing, and sticking it to the Kingdom. Together they would begin a crime-streak across the coast that would catch the ire of many local governments and sailors alike. Word spread of a diminutive, shadowy figure and their strange, cloaked dog working with vicious pirates to rob every dock across the continent.
Azna had plenty of fun watching their exploits cause a bit of chaos along the coast, but eventually convinced the pirates they needed to head back to Broken Bow and lay low before the other shoe dropped. It had been a few months of debauchery and crime with the Crag Pirates and Azna was excited to use their spoils to fund upgrades for Jackass and their weapons. The pirates convinced Azna of one last small job in Broken Bow before they parted ways back for the Crag, and the kobold shrugged and took it for a little extra coin. By the time Azna had made it into the drop location for the job, they were ambushed by guards. Their saving grace was their size and speed, but the kobold was bloodied and bruised, having lost good equipment on their escape from the set-up. When Azna raced back to their home, it was clear the door had been forced open. A few things were scattered here and there, but Azna was surprised to find a lot of their possessions had been left alone. Just being careful, Azna checked on the location of the hidden cryptex. To their horror, the pirates had somehow known its hiding place behind a secret panel in a kitchen cupboard. Azna had no clue how they knew to look for it and became convinced the Crag must employ telepaths or knew something about their parents.
Azna’s luck began to run dry after being duped by the pirates, and their smuggling was constantly under heavy watch by increased guard presence. Less and less jobs came, and the kobold began to lose grip on their goals, becoming lonely and foolishly drunk on some nights. Eventually Azna got tired of living in Broken Bow as it held no fond memories for them any longer. They slowly made their way to the Duchy of Ulana, taking on small jobs but often being turned away for their outlandish attitude and looks. The kobold would just scoff and walk off, middle finger aloft in the air with their lizard companion always at their side.
