Ophelia to Flora
Flora, I figured you’d be one of the ones who would have come after me. If you’re receiving this, I was right. There’s no easy way to say this, and I’m sorry I didn’t tell you beforehand, but Hrim is dying. I can’t keep doing this knowing the kind of suffering we’re causing, even if it is on people of the Kingdom. Everything we’ve ever stood for says warfare like this is unacceptable. And I’ve got to do something about it or completely sever myself from it. I intend to do both. Look around. You’ve seen how the war has expanded. And it’s only going to get worse. Lady Relactia has vanished. Grateltown has sent too many children to die in a land not their own for a sick unjust cause. I don’t know what the Crag wants, but if they’re going to burn everything down and take us with them, it can’t be good for anyone. That’s why I’m taking the troop movement plans south where I intend to sell them to the Kingdom. Hopefully that will lead to a stalemate and eventually a ceasefire. Then I’m going to take that money, find Wind, and leave this Termina-forsaken war to rot. I’m telling this because I trust you, even though we’ve ended things between us. I’ve enclosed my badge of office which I’ve covered in my own blood, and the original copy of the troop reports. Give it to Helga if you want to stay in Hrim and forget about me. Or continue to hunt me with whoever they’ve grouped you with to bring me home. I’ll respect whatever decision you make. If you go back, I just want you to look around and think to yourself: is this the same Hrim we’ve lived in all our lives? Is it safe for our way of life anymore? And whatever you do, downplay your association with me. I can’t explain why in this letter, but there are forces at work that are bigger than Hrim or this war. If you choose to hunt me, I’ll be given no choice but to continue to fight for what I believe in. Even if that means cutting you down. -Ophelia
