The Rules of Grunkusball
Written below are the rules to the honored game of Grunkusball, named for the great chieftain Grunk, founder of Alterporton, may Moradin guide his passage through the never-ending tunnels.
The Object of the Game
The object of Grunkusball is to have the least area covered by the bioluminescence, henceforth reffered to as Glow, in your teams' goal area at the conclusion of the match. The match concludes when the Grunkusball, henceforth referred to as the ball, has been destroyed to the point of it not being perceivable by the naked eye.
Materials Needed for the Game
8 (eight) players, split into even teams physically and magically equipped to play the game.
1 (one) ball, made of a mixture of peat, moss, glowstone, and shale, 3 feet in diameter, magically held together to be made pliable to be provided by the hosting team, and may be inspected by the visiting team prior to the match.
2 (two) pairs of Grunkus Gloves, henceforth referred to as gloves, to be made of leather with metal spikes affixed to the palm and fingers to be provided by one member of each team.
1 (one) court area both length-wise, height-wise, and width-wise equipped with the proper layout to facilitate the game. The optimal size is 2000 cubits length-wise and 1500 cubits width-wise, separated into four distinct areas each measuring 500 cubits length-wise and 1500 cubits width-wise. Height-wise the court must be able to facilitate a game where no player must be restricted in their natural size.
Additional Requirements
1 (one) impartial magic-equipped individual able to maintain a spell by which 8 (eight) players have their hands magically bound for a portion of the game.
Players and Their Roles
All players begin the game with their hands magically bound together behind their backs. All players must stop movement upon the conclusion of the match. All players must not speak, physically or magically, with the exception of the Goaler upon hearing the Goal Gong.
The Glover
The Glover is an individual, 1 (one) per team, attuned to a pair of gloves they themselves provide. The opposing Glover may inspect their opponent's gloves prior to the match. Upon hearing the Initiation Gong, the glover's hands are unbound and they may use their gloves to push and remove the outer layers from the ball. Any glow accrued on the gloves may not be rubbed orotherwise removed until the Half Gong is sounded, signalling the third phase of the game. Upon hearing the Half Gong thew glover may not in any way, physical or magical, interact with the ball and instead must use the gloves to collect glow from either neutral area and dispense it in the opposing goal area. Upon hearing the Grunkus Gong, signalling the fourth and final phase of the game, the glover may now additionally collect glow from their goal area as well as the neutral areas to dispense in the opposing goal area.
The Goaler
The Goaler is an individual, 1 (one) per team, who upon hearing the Goal Gong, signalling the second phase of the game, has their hands unbound and must retreat to their own goal area from where they may verbalize commands to the rest of their team. The Goaler is only permitted to touch the ball when it is in their own goal area, and may only touch an opposing team member when they are in the goal area.
The Geomancer
The Geomancer is an individual, 1 (one) per team, who upon hearing the Half Gong, has their hands unbound and may no longer physically touch the ball. They may use magic to affect the environment around the ball, not the ball itself or have it be a penalty (see below). The geomancer may not physically interact with any players on the court, but may perform magic from the approved spell-list (see below).
The Grunker
The Grunker is an individual, 1 (one) per team, who upon hearing the Grunkus Gong, has their hands unbound and may interact with the ball physically in any manner. The Grunker may also physically interact with the opposing Grunker, but not with any other player unless contact was initiated by that player. The goal of the Grunker is to achieve a Grunkus, or destruction of the ball prematurely in the opponents' goal area.
Penalties
Touching
Any physical or magical touching when not permitted results in a 30 second time-out during which the player must not move or use magic of any kind.
Magical Grunkus
Exclusive to the Geomancer, when a Grunkus occurrs due to a magic effect centered on the ball. This results in a one match suspension and immediate forfeiture of the current match.
