The Imperial Salt Flats of Ujijar (uʤiʤɑr)
Located midway between the border of Hœm and Ptarshakk is found the Ujijar. Deep in the middle of the Ptsannae Desert is perhaps the driest region in the known world: a vast region of ancient salt that has for centuries been a source of wealth and trade. During the first century of the Ptarshish colonization of Eastern Gruthe, the discovery of the salt flats made the Ptarshishin Houses wealthy. Very quickly, the Ujijar salt flats became a bustling mining operation and simultaneously, a place of great suffering for the enslaved people who toiled in it. Disobedient slaves were threatened with being sent to Ujijar. The death rate of slaves sent to toil at Ujijar was considered an acceptable loss when traded off for the value of the salt traded throughout the continent and beyond. Salt trade still fills Ptarshakk’s coffers but was essential for the prosperity of the colony during its first century. The name is derived from the naga name for the salt flats and the region around it, jiij /ʤiːʤ/, before it was taken by the Ptarshish.
