Phantaforas

22nd of First Light, 3569

Magic first began to recede at the beginning of the First Century of Union, 2822. Referred to as 'The Hollowing' in multiple texts, the phenomenon was first thought to be a pandemic that afflicted Aelvanir infants. Despite countless attempts at researching its possible cause and cure, more and more children were being born without the arcane touch—over the course of several centuries, more than half of the population was composed of Aelvanir who were either born without magic or with it but lost it over the course of their life.

By the turn of the 35th century, less than a quarter of the population were able to produce magic, and even less were able to keep it as they aged. Each attempt at deciphering the sickness has resulted in a devastating failure; several theories, each more outrageous than the next, have popped up in an attempt to rationalize the phenomenon:

Perhaps it was the Melivora, who were first to shun their Aelvanir lineage. Perhaps it was the vain Alfar, too absorbed with themselves, or the militaristic Hydrurga, too callous towards many others. Perhaps it was the secretive Fatum, hiding their evil deeds in their abundant mountains, or the Aelcere, the unnatural, the half-bloods and quarter-bloods, the dirty-bloods, the soot-bloods. Either way, wherever the metaphorical finger of blame pointed, it spread poison across the nations.

It's 3569 of the Known Era and Phantaforas is at the brink of another war bred by misunderstanding, confusion, and frustration over the receding levels of what the Aelvanir had once prided themselves in the most. The slightest miscalculation may cost nations thousands of lives as it did before—perhaps even more. If only they knew the source of it all was beyond their time but actually a consequence of their ancestors' actions.

The Aelvanir, after all, weren't just sent to Phantaforas for no reason.
