Backpack Squid
Backpack squid is the colloquial term that humans use to refer to the small pet squids that some Kałceba people carry. Many Kałceba adopt pet squids when they are children. Once it's time for them to begin their Exploration period -- the time when they explore the world -- they can't bear the thought of leaving their beloved pet behind.
So they place them in a clear, round backpack and fill it with water. Many passerbys will stop a wandering Kałceba in the street just to get a glimpse of their pet. Some will even ask to play with it. The squid is an extremely clever and playful creature. And Kałceba people are happy to let their pet squid out for a few minutes of play. However, don't ever tap on their backpack. The squid doesn't like it and the owner definitely doesn't like it. Don't be surprised if one of their own tentacled hairs reach out to shock you instead.
Backpack squids come in a variety of bright colors. Like their owners, they are able to change color and shape on demand. Kałceba enjoy training their squid to change colors and shapes to really shock and awe a crowd. When they are not travelling on land, Kałceba will play with their pet under the water. They enjoy climbing into their hair so it's like a squid inside a squid. As well as playing hide and seek. Most backpack squids are hand-fed by their owners, catching fish directly out of the water and slowly feeding it the caught fisth.
Backpack squids eyes are half the size of its body and each of its tentacled limbs can shock you if they are surprised. But typically, they enjoy tickling people they just met. Rarely do they feel threatened when they are near their owners. However, if they do get upset, they are not afraid to squirt you with dark colored ink. The toxin isn't enough to harm humans, but it is certainly a pain to get out.
Kałceba are fairly laissez faire about the consumption of fish -- they are carnivores after all. However, when they see people eating squid they get upset. Maybe it's because of the adorable Backpack squid, which every Kałceba owned at one point or another as a child. Or perhaps the Kałceba see two many similarities between them. Perhaps through their telepathic communication they know that the intelligence which shines through backpack squid is even more evident when you share a conversation.
Ok, that was toooo cute! I really like the details you added, such as training, food they eat, and how they behave. The reader gets a nice glimpse into Kałceba people and their pets :)
