God-Touched Artifacts
Humanity was on the brink of extinction and scientists saved the day in the eleventh hour. This is the story passed down the generations. Not that many of this generation care. After nearly a millennia of life on Phasmatum, Earth itself is a horror story--a bedtime fable--that parents will tell their children when they tuck them into bed. The the Council will tell other countries when they step too far out of line. We nearly died once . . . let's not have a repeat.
In the fable, the scientists are the heroes. Advanced technology the ultimate weapon.
But there are whispers of another tale. One that is not taught in schools. Is not endorsed by any of the world's religions. Has never been discussed openly. Only in whispers of secret societies . . . handed down by the descendants of those who are convinced their ancestors were the true heroes of the day.
And so the tale goes like this:
Once upon a time, all the world leaders and scientists and researchers and greatest minds of humanity came together to solve the problem of Earth--more specifically--how could humanity get out. It was a hopeless pursuit. The technology needed was centuries away from being solved. Near space was already so clogged with ships that the night sky shone with them instead of stars. Going underground, traveling to the Moon . . . Mars . . . they were temporary solutions at best. For humans were not made to thrive in such places.
All the world leaders and scientists and researchers and greatest minds failed.
Hope was lost.
But the religious fanatics and philosophers and dreamers and devotees had come up with a plan of their own. To pray.
Yes to pray, but it was not just prayers. The gods and goddesses answered their prayers with one directive. Find as many god-touched artifacts as they could and come together as one.
And so they brought these items to the World Council. And as the items came together, the building shuddered and split. The sky split. Before those present, a Voice whispered in their ears. There would be 100 days to gather one million people represented by those families who came together. 1000 days to construct a space ship -- an ark -- that would carry them to a new World.
And on the 1000th day, the sky would split once more. A pocket would form. And they were to go through that pocket into a new world.
This is the power when religions join as one to speak to the True God(ddess). This is the power that is bestowed when legendary items powers combine as one. Humanity is bestowed the power of the divine.
The legends vary on how many items they found. And over the centuries, these families split and splintered -- artifacts exchanged hands, their powers forgotten in the wind.
Of course, these societies will never share the Truth with the commoner human. To do so would risk those lost artifacts falling into the hands of the unworthy.

This legend is spoken only in whispers throughout various secret societies who have all descended from the ancestors who welded these items.
