Dwarves worship the Idols. These enormous creatures reside in one of the 12 Dwarven cities scattered about the material plane and have powers equal to any other deities. These Idols were first excavated by the Dwarves thousands of years ago as the dug into the earth in search of mineral wealth. The discovery of the first Idol (which one is lost to time) prompted the excavation of its peers, directed by the Idol itself. Once all 12 were dug up, the Dwarves began to settle around them, prompting the nomadic Dwarves to settle down and civilisation began. The Idols were venerated at first, but this grew into a religion once their powers became known fully. They offered a pact with the race of Dwarves, in exchange for their worship and their trust, the Idols would grant the dwarves access to the Idol’s power and when the dwarves came to die their souls would join the Idol’s in a great meeting of minds that would grow in power over the ages. Each Idol represents the rock it was mined from, there are 4 igneous, 4 metamorphic and 4 sedimentary Idols. The igneous tend more towards evil, the metamorphic towards neutrality and the sedimentary towards good, although these are only trends and do not readily reflect the Idol’s natures. Each idol began as a head but grew into a humanoid shape with a Dwarven, stocky appearance because as the Dwarves souls joined them, their bodies became that type of rock and were added to the Idol.
