Dwarves

Due to their innate wanderlust Dwarves are the only species found in Virtually every region at least as travelers, if not as residents.   Dwarves In the Northern City States, Dwarves come in basically two varieties. One variety is the dwarves that spend much of their lives underground, or the Delven. They make a living mining and selling the ore and gems and stones they mine or quarry to the elves. At one time they were little more than slaves of the better-armed elves, but that is no longer the case. Delven   How has this affected their culture? The Delven do have little love for the elves, theirs is a business relationship, more on this later, though I will mention that the elves are no longer the better armed.   commonly spend about five months below ground then one month selling their wares and then another five months underground. Some clans bring their women and children with them to underground cities; others leave their families above ground in well-fortified mountain retreats. At one time the Iron elves, or the mountain dwelling elves, and the dwarves waged a bitter war. Since the end of that war the dwarves and elves have lived in comfortable peace.   Nice thought. Very ideological, but realistically unlikely. Your world, your rules, though! This was indeed a gloss. There is every appearance of peace, but it might better be described as a cold war. The Dwarves do not trust the elves here in the mountains, (this is a local thing) and the elves fear the dwarves. The dwarves have no interest in taking over the elves, or enslaving them, (Dwarves in general are highly opposed to slavery, though there are exceptions) they have however, become very good at fighting them. During the Dwarven uprising, the elven losses were massive. Many of the dwarven slaves escaped and though elves are better at working metal, the dwarves were better at using it for mining; they dug underneath some of the elven cities and whole cities were completely destroyed. As long as both elves and dwarves fear each other, their peace is assured. If that should ever change, however… This is of course only the state of things in the Nevrada Mountains where most of the mining is done.   The Dwarves find a ready market for their wares in the Iron Elves mountain cities, and the elves can sell make the best axes, picks and mining equipment in exchange for the very best ore, rock and gems. The agreement works well. The Dwarven and elven cities in the mountains are immediately distinguishable from each other. The dwarves build strong, practical, plain cities with all the amenities needed in a high mountain retreat and the elves build cities that are breath taking to see, with shining white towers whose architecture is taken from the mountains themselves. The majority of dwarves live above ground as wanders. Dwarves are great philosophers, astronomers and mapmakers. They have a strong wanderlust and love meeting new people. Wandering dwarves are usually called Werven, unless they are the dark-skinned nomads of the Badlands which are called Baerdal, or the more reclusive wild dwarves of the Great Forest, which are called Windarge. All of these sub races, however, wander in their own right, seldom owning land or even desiring to. To a dwarf, the less he owns the freer he is. Dwarves take readily to magic because of their dedication and studious nature, and they are one of the few races the Heathlanders will not kill on sight, though even dwarves are not allowed in the Hearth.   Wanderers do not make good mages, I'm afraid to say. Sorry to argue, but the time and dedication necessary would tend to go completely contrary to the desire to wander and explore.   I do not object to arguments. Many dwarves find the satisfaction they need from wandering in mental wandering or studying. Dwarves are actually quite dedicated, and great seekers, even if it is only seeking knowledge. Some dwarves spend much of their lives at the universities, studying and teaching and researching. The Durager (mentioned later) exemplified this scientific trend, though in a twisted way. Science and magic share the quest for knowledge and most controversial sciences, and newest spells. Dwarves are experimenters and often do not accept the status quo. So as mages, they tend have slightly difference style than humans or elves. They are vaguely like the D and D Gnomes in this, but not quite so far out there. (No clockwork dragons, though dwarves do love clockwork, maybe even developed it) Also Dwarves often teach at universities, and Mage schools because not only does this give them access to labs and founding for their research, but also because they have no objection at all to the small salary or poor living quarters. In some rare cases, dwarves make good mechanical engineers, though usually their pursuits tend to be more theoretical. Because of their wanderings dwarves   Dwarven Exceptions The Under dwarves The only real exception to the dwarven appearance or lifestyle is the Duregar. All dwarves think of the Duregar as evil, much the way earth humans feel about Nazi’s. They were a powerful race at one time with vast underground cities. The White Dwarves were scientists, or so they claimed, building vast complex machinery and war devices. They experimented on a great many races in horrible and inhuman ways. They kept meticulous records and made many scientific notes on clay tablets. Their claim to being interested only in the scientific good of their subjects seems belied by the fact that they almost never performed these experiments on Duregar or other dwarves. Delven will kill Duregar on sight, but that still doesn’t explain the strange and sudden disappearance of most of the Duregar many years ago. Delven smashed and burned the empty cities the Duregar left. Good bit of mystery, but I'm a bit confused as to the purpose of these guys in game. Just general knowledge should any dwarf encounter a white skinned dwarf with bad teeth. They should treat them as if they were Americans and just met a guy with a swastika tattooed on his forehead.     Duregar   Nazi Germany   White Dwarves   Duregar   Nevrada Mountains     Dwarves   Americans   Surface Dwarves   Werven   Everywhere     Dwarves   Middle Eastern   Desert Dwarves   Baerdal   The Badlands of Baerdo     Dwarves   Swiss   Deep Dwarves   Delven   Nevrada Mountains     Dwarves   American Indians   Wild Dwarves   Windarge   The Great Forest
