Ship Cults

Aboard any spaceship in the Empire one will find a normalized worship of 3 entities represented by a colorized mask. The spacer cults revolve around worship and placation of the following beings Death - Gold Death is seen as a busy trader, merchant and gambler. He is driven by profit and his currency is human souls. When departing a port it is a common practice for spacers to hold a feast where they offer a food, drink or other consumable for death to spare them on this trip - The feast is then eaten by the crew and the spirt of the food and drink finds its way to death. If a spacer dies on a ship it's considered that their offering wasn't worth as much as their soul. Marines are particularly fond of Death as a god as their primary responsibility is dealing in death.
The Void - Black The Void is seen as a mysterious and indifferent monster. The void rules everything in space and even hyperspace is his realm. He holds court over all, Death is his steward and the Ship is his beautiful daughter, the spacers are his subjects. Altering the Void's domain is seen as sacrilege and as such the many mega engineering projects of the Imperial core worlds put spacers on edge and they tend to avoid spending much time on them.
The Ship - Silver, iron or white The Ship is seen as a motherly figure, kind and beautiful. She is given loyalty and toil, one promises to attend your duties aboard and never stray from your responsibilities. The Captain is often seen as the avatar of the ship and is held to be a person of respect beyond their mere rank. The Ship as a god is seen as a fragmentary being, every ship is an aspect of the The Ship, the death of a ship is not the death of The Ship, the spirit lives on in The Ship
Each of these entities are held to be masters of a spacers fate - Before their first jump any crewman who hasn't even jumped before must be brought to the Void's court where they will pledge their loyalty to The Ship, Ask the Void for permission to enter and traverse his realm and finally offer their gifts to Death to avoid collection of their souls. This court is made up of the most grotesque crewman to take the Void's role, they are often given cosmetics to change their appearance along with the ebony mask. The most attractive crewman is selected to act as The Ship along the silver mask. Finally the best fighter among the crew - often a Marine is selected to be Death and given the gold mask.
