Alchemist's Powder
Black powder has been a part of warfare on Plavithen for quite some time, several centuries, in fact. But Alchemist's powder is very new. Created in 4374 by Galgin Silverhorn, alchemist's powder is actually an explosive "baseline" upon which various other effects can be layered.
Furthermore, because it is so easy to use, marksmen, grenadiers, and cannoneers will often carry a collection of different reagents with them depending on what sorts of foes they expect to face or what types of battlefield conditions they expect to encounter. One of the most famous such incidents was the Battle of Finsel Bridge. After the destruction of the bridge by the defenders, the archduke of Rallem decided to have his troops cross the Zengar river at a ford. The defenders. having expected this, bombarded the attackers with frost-infused cannonballs and grenades as they forded the river, freezing them in place and making them easy pickings for sharpshooters. It was one of the world's great military upsets and proved to the world the utility of alchemist's powder.
Another famous use was the slaying of the lich Kalanthius by the paladin Markin Sorme. Sorme loaded his pistols with silver bullets and alchemist's powder infused with holy salt, singlehandedly slaying the powerful archdemon as it attempted to raise the dead from a cemetery in Valganinth.
Utility
Alchemist's powder is a essentially a black powder variant that can be augmented with various alchemical reagents, thus enhancing projectiles fired with it or ordnance made with it.
Complexity
Alchemist's powder itself is fairly simple - it uses a mix of the usual black powder components and some Pitgran pirgran. Because of the pitgran content, it's a little toxic to handle; gloves are advised. And like everything else made with pitgran, all of the visible effects are tinted some shade of green.
