Officer's Carriage

The so-called "officer's carriage" started out as a vehicle for military officers, but eventually changed to be more of an official vehicle, especially for traveling nobility.   The carriage is armored and has four lanterns, one on each corner, to provide light around it, but the thing that made it a diplomatic vehicle is the way it can be transformed into a temporary structure.   Folded into the body of the carriage along the roof are several wooden arms with metal braces and tucked away in a special compartment are a collection of heavy waxed canvas sides. This means that with less than an hour's work, the carriage itself can be unhitched from the horses, locked in place, and transformed into a hard-sided inner chamber in a large, heavy tent.   These tents can be used as a command tent in a military campaign or as an especially-comfortable temporary place to stay for diplomats or nobles on long trips. Typically the noble and their spouse sleep within the carriage body itself (the seats fold and lock together to make a large bed) and their children or high-ranking servants or security staff sleep in the "main body" of the tent.   Especially-deluxe versions hold even more folding items - tables are especially common.   The tents usually extend about 15 feet from the carriage itself on each side and the vertical braces and tent frame are heavy and strong meaning that the tent is excellent protection from the weather, if not from attack.   Rumors persist of an elven variant using Elven Spidercloth that actually functions as a fortification, but so far the elves have yet to unveil such a thing.
