Pirate

Piracy has existed on Plavithen since people started shipping things by water. In the current world, it has taken on a strange new aspect because of its close connection with the fey.   It should be noted that there is plenty of "traditional" piracy as well. Heavily-armed ships full of violent criminals terrorize civilian vessels for profit and sport, stealing and killing as they go. But fey piracy is a different beast.   Most of the fey piracy centers around The Vibrant Grave, a medium-sized island in the northern Shengalvan Archipelago. Here on this island, there has always been a strong link to the fey realm, and when the Vanorax navy tried to take the island, they got significantly more than they bargained for, suffering catastrophic losses before being forces to give up the assault. The mass of wrecked ships off the island's coast has been shaped into a pirate city over the years, and the free-spirited nature of the pirates was far more agreeable to the fey than the crushing tyranny of the Vanorax.   It didn't take long before pirates were recruiting crew members from the ranks of the fey, and at some point, more powerful fey realized that captaining a pirate ship was an effective means of getting what they wanted in the mortal world.   The current state of fey piracy is both formidable and strange. The best are more like the noblest of privateers, captained by eladrin lords and crewed by dryads who contribute their living trees to the ship's construction. The worst are seen aboard living ships (giant mimics) are crewed by redcaps mounted on giant water bugs and captained by hags.   Sometimes they want simple objects of beauty, sometimes they want justice, sometimes they want terror and slaughter. No two crews are the same, and the most benevolent have been know to stop ships merely to hear a noteworthy performer sing over the waves, showering the entire crew and any passengers with blessings and favor. But the most cruel will butcher an entire crew and leave the ship adrift and unlooted. Most are somewhere in between, taking what they want by force, but what they want may be truly bizarre. Such is the capricious nature of the fey.
