Red Pines
Living in or near the Forest of Shadows is dangerous proposition at the best of times, but few communities have had it worse than the farming village now known as Red Pines.
About seventeen years ago, the insane lich-druid Galthavor decided that the residents of the small community known as Raltfield were just what he needed for some sort of ritual or experiment. He never explained himself in any great detail, but his attack on the town was savage and came without warning. the initial raids killed close to a quarter of the population and sent the rest into hiding in a makeshift palisade during the night, emerging only in high sun to scavenge for food and supplies.
That lasted for about a week and then Galthavor's malignant forces set the fields on fire. This turned out to be a tactical error on the part of the lich. The plume of smoke attracted a group of Thornhearted who came to investigate and an absolutely vicious battle between the lich's forces on one side and the villagers and warlocks on the other erupted.
Nobody can agree whether the "red" in Red Pines is meant to reference blood or fire; there was plenty of both in the ensuing fighting, but eventually the lich was slain and the village rebuilt. All told, the fighting claimed just more than 60% of the former population. The local baron at the time never officially responded or sent any aid, and this has left the community understandably mistrustful and resentful of their supposed rulers.
Red Pines is still a fortified town. The locals have decreased the role of agriculture in the local economy and have replaced it with logging and craftworks such as wagons and barrels that can be made with the wood they harvest. They also tend to be suspicious of visitors, but oddly sympathetic toward anyone on the run, and have sheltered numerous fugitives.
