St. Davin's Cathedral

St Davin's Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Karkovia. It is located in the capital city of Taranavo and is used for state religious business.
It is also considered one of the wonders of the world and is the single largest known piece of art on all of Plavithen.

Purpose / Function

The cathedral, like most buildings of its kind, is used for typical religious practices, but it is also an important cultural artifact of the world it inhabits and the nation that built it.

Alterations

The construction of the church took 17 years, but additions never really stopped. As time has passed, every interior surface, no matter how humble, has slowly been turned into a work of art. It's not all ostentatious; there's a simple scrollwork carving into the back of the pews, and the floor tiles are laid out such that they symbolize a river running down the main aisle of the sanctuary, but nothing inside the cathedral has been left wholly unadorned.
The cathedral has seen additional construction over the years as well. There are a number of sublevels that date back a mere 81 years and an additional administrative wing that was just finished 26 years ago.

Architecture

Because of the magical nature of its construction, the cathedral is essentially one seamless block of stone. It was roughed into shape and then a roof was added and the real work began.
The entire inside of the cathedral is essentially a huge sculpture/mural depicting the lives and important events of the Church of Light, Karkovia, and a number of saints. It is said that priests can serve a lifetime in the cathedral and not see everything.

History

St. Davin's cathedral was built in honor of St. Davin, a saint from some 300 years prior to the start of its construction in 4127. Construction took 17 years to complete, but was expedited rapidly with magically-generated stone.
