The Summit

On a lonely mountaintop in the barony of Larganford in central Karkovia sits the renowned and prestigious magic school known as The Summit.   The school takes students of high and low birth and somewhat unusually, trains both the academics and the inborn. Wizards, sorcerers, and bards can all learn their trade at The Summit, and typically wind up with prestigious positions when they do. Tuition is free and The Summit actively recruits those with latent magical talent. Peasant families have had their entire fortunes changed by giving birth to one magically-talented child, as The Summit is willing to subsidize the loss of a potential set of laboring hands generously in order to train the young mage.   This generous patronage comes with a hefty set of strings, however, as the Summit funds its training by financially obligating its graduates. The school is careful not to make this an onerous burden, but they are also very serious about being paid. However, the school is not a crime syndicate. Especially well-off mages can and have paid off their stake, and the school is not particularly inclined to chase down mages who have somehow fallen on hard times and lack the ability to pay without starving or resorting to crime.   Students are rarely dissastisfied with the quality of their instruction, either. The Summit trains everything from court diviners to battle mages, and students are encouraged to network and form close friendships with other students, especially ones from different backgrounds and programs. The school has a strong vested interest in magic as an equalizer between socioeconomic classes and ideological backgrounds, but they also try to get the mages they train to police one another. This can (and has) had unwanted side effects, but it also means than numerous aspiring arcane tyrants have been brought down in one way or another by their former classmates.   The Summit campus itself is a beautiful, stately place, with a lot of "impossible" magical architecture and artwork dotted around the campus. Bards and transmutation students in particular typically have academic projects that involve beautifying the campus, and the best of these tend to be kept for long periods of time.   Access to The Summit is either trivial or incredibly dangerous depending on how a traveler attempts to reach it. They school maintains several teleportation circles, and these are a very safe and reliable means of reaching the campus, but the narrow, winding mountain road that those traveling by foot must use is perilous indeed. New students usually arrive either by teleportation or flying conveyance of some sort.
