Prince Vasil

Second Prince Vasil

His father was the king until his death, three years prior to the beginning of the story, at which point Vasil's older brother, Crown Prince Levi, took the throne.
As per tradition, his father had two simultaneous wives (First Queen, Alysia, and Second Queen, Meava), both of which he loved greatly; however, Queen Alysia was never able to produce any heirs. All of her pregnancies ended in a miscarriage or stillborn child. Queen Meava bore all of the king's living heirs: First Prince, Levi; Second Prince, Vasil; and the youngest, Third Prince, Gavriel. Vasil is very protective of his brothers, caring a lot about them, but he doesn't usually show it, preferring to keep a cordial but distant relationship with them.
It was in part due to his protectiveness, in part Rielle's erratic hostility upon first meeting and strange, unknown origins, that Vasil found himself immediately distainful and distrusting of Rielle. She wasn't exactly fond of him either. And so, the two found themselves at odds - arguing and bickering and throwing... creative language... and insults at one another during ever interaction, however small, they had. He couldn't understand how his brothers tolerated her. He found her presence infuriating, yet Levi and Gav not only tolerated her presence, but actually seemed to like and enjoy her company. Vasil was quite muffed when Levi invited Rielle to live at the palace with them, and even more so when she agreed. Why his brother wanted to help a crazy girl with her insane, nonsensical mission, he would never know. But what could he do? Levi was king, if he wanted her in the palace or to help her with an impossible goal, what could Vasil do?

After much time, forced proximity, and forced problem-solving, Vasil and Rielle slowly develop a friendship of sorts. The two still bicker every time they're around each other, though it's far tamer than before and more out of habit than anything else. See, both have feelings for each other thinly veiled by the common ground they've found, and neither wants to ruin their relationship or break the mold by letting on anything. Oh, and by "thinly veiled" I mean it's pretty obvious to Levi and Gavriel. Rielle and Vasil aren't blind to their feelings, but they're in denial of their own attachments towards the other. Despite that, both try to show their affection, perhaps subconsciously, but without revealing their true feelings, while looking to see if the other likes them back.
At some point, it stops being a matter of "does he/she like me?" and turns into a silent struggle to get the other to admit their feelings, but not giving away that they like the other back - even though it's obvious. Rielle is the one to finally break this back and forth when one night while studying late in the library, she kisses him.
