Urúsz

Description

The urúsz are large, even-toed ungulates that are found mostly in the highlands of the Tukhamu Magas, and to a lesser extent in the Eltórián Bonelands. These herbivores are the largest domesticated wild-life in the region, owing to their docile temperament. They are broad and muscular with shaggy coats of long hair. Their most distinctive feature is the grouping of horns at the back of their head that forms a mane-like crest of sorts. Adult male urúsz are usually around 1.7-2.1 meters in height, and 2.8-3.4 meters in length, but there have been sightings of wild urúsz that have grown up to 3 meters in height and nearly 4.5 meters in length. It is said that urúsz continue growing for their entire lives.   They are grazers, and they usually travel in small packs in nature. A pack is always lead by a dominant male, who chases off any other young males who seem like they would dare challenge its position or try a chance at the females. Thus young males usually leave the pack when they come off age. During mating season, male urúsz often end up in (sometimes deadly) fights to compete for the available female urúsz.   They are frequently used as beasts of burden or pack animals. Due to their densely muscular build they can carry heavy loads even over long distances. Their strength and endurance are famous enough that there are many sayings named after them such as "strong like an urúsz" etc.

Intelligence and Behavior

Outside of captivity, they herd for most of the year. Within the pack status is determined by both displays and fights, with raw strength generally being the deciding factor. Oftentimes they will form small depressions in the ground by rolling around and covering themselves in dirt or mud, which is called wallowing. This can be play behavior, but it can also show deference or be employed for grooming.
