Jergal and the Knucklebones
There came a time long ago, when Jergal, the old god of the dead, murder, and strife, stepped down from his throne of bones. He had become tired of his responsibilities and wished to relinquish his domains to others. A group of mortal adventurers known as the Dark Three approached Jergal in a bid to win the position of Lord of Death.
Their names were Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul. Each sought different goals with this power. Bane wanted to dominate as the ultimate tyrant. Bhaal wished to use the power to assassinate all those who opposed him. Myrkul the necromancer wanted to rule over the dead. They bickered amongst themselves over who would be the most fit to hold the station of the God of Death. All were surprised when Jergal willingly offered his portfolio to them, should they prove worthy.
First, they played a game of nine pin using skulls in place of the pins and balls. Malar, the Lord of Beasts, intervened, jealous that he was not offered this power by Jergal. It was then that Jergal suggested they allow Lady Luck to decide who was the winner. He snapped off his skeletal fingers and produced a set of knucklebones. Each of the Dark Three rolled the dice. Bane won first place and he selected hatred, strife, and tyranny as his domain. Second came Myrkul, who became god of the dead. He thought himself clever, for when his companions died, he would rule over them too. Third was Bhaal, who claimed the domains of murder and death. Malar was angry for her had gained nothing in this venture.
And so it came to pass that Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul came to be known as the Dead Three. Jergal himself fell into obscurity, serving loyally as the scribe of the dead and seneschal to the Lord of Bones.
