Sommerende (zoh-mehr-end-uh)

A celebration from the Saltbrine Coast. The holiday represents the end of the summer and beginning of autumn, as well as a time to honor those who have passed on. It is said that during this time of year, the veil between the material plane and the Shadowfell is the thinnest.
People carve turnips or gourds and place lit candles within them to honor the dearly departed as well as to ward off foul spirits. The tradition is said to have been adopted from the elves of Polnarus, who celebrate a similar holiday. A popular legend surrounding the holiday is about a man known as Stingy Jack, who became lost in the Shadowfell and made a clever deal with the Raven Queen to escape.
