Basic Information

Anatomy

A frost wolf stands some 4 1/2 ft tall at the shoulder, reaching 8 ft in length, with a tail adding another thirty or so inches, depending on the individual. Females tend to be slightly shorter than males, with a wider stride comparative to the males, who tend to be slightly leaner.
Frost wolves have four legs, ending in five toes on the forelimbs, and four on the rear, although the first toes on the front feet are positioned high enough up the leg that they do not form part of the wolf's footprints when it walks. These toes do not grant much dexterity, and as such provide little in the way of holding items. Frost wolves are extremly intelligent however, and can work around these physical limitations by other means.

Genetics and Reproduction

Frost wolves will mate with a life long partner, though for protection of the pack, only one mated pair in a pack will bear young at a time. Gestation time is 4 months, which will form a litter of between two to four pups born in the late spring or early summer.

Growth Rate & Stages

The pups are helpless at birth, unable even to open their eyes until they are two weeks old. The mother produces milk during this time, suckling the young for the first two months of their life. At the end of one month, the pups can eat half-digested meat disgorged by one of the adults.
The mother will nurse her own young and keep them clean and well groomed, but other females of the pack can step in and attend to these duties as well. Raising the litter is a job taken on by the entire pack, with individuals taking turns watching over the pups in the den while others hunt for game and protect the pack. Frost wolves have a strong bond with the young of their pack, and willingly risk their lives to keep them safe.
At six weeks, the pups are strong and large enough to accompany the mother on their first hunt. Prior to this, an adult will merely cripple a smaller animal and cary it back to the den for the pups to finish off on their own, giving them valuable practice in killing prey. Later in the year, pups will be able to hunt on their own, and may opt to leave the pack at that time to make their own way into the world. A frost wolf will reach full maturity at two years, and can live for around fifteen years.

Ecology and Habitats

Because of their tolerance of the cold, and inability to survive in warm environments, frost wolves live in colder climates, usually in forests or in the mountains. They spend a lot of time hunting larger game, and find pleasure in doing so. in Kuraudosukurēpā they are considered an invasive species however, as the only cold section in the country is in the mountainside, and are considered demons throughout the region, making their lives extrodinarily difficult.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivorous when circumstances dictate, Frost Wolves are carvinores by choice. They prefer larger came like moose, caribou and ox, but will settle for smaller creatures without issue. They have no qualms against eating the flesh of humanoids, but are well aware of the dangers inherent in hunting humanoids. As a last resort, frost wolves will guzzle down berries, fruits, lichens, and moss..

Uses, Products & Exploitation

A winter wolfs fur plays an important part in its general immunity to the cold. Impervious to the cold, the pelts of these creatures are completly immune to cold based attacks, and the temperatures of the most brutal of winters.
This cold immunity has its backlash however, as fire based attacks, and heat itself are twice as deadly to a winter wolf.
Pelts can be sold for as much as 2000gp in good condition. Silver pelts, due to rarity, frequently can be sold at 3500gp. They are generally used in the manufacture of luxurious cloaks, robes, and boots to provide protection from the cold.
Additionally, as magical beasts, Winter wolf bones, fur, and other body parts are in high demand for spell components, or for magical items dealing with cold spells.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Frost wolves have ecellent senses of smell, giving them the ability to track prey by smell alone and to differentiate between numerous individual scents soly through their excelent noses. Packs will often mark their territories along their boundaries, eaasilly telling other packs where their main competition is, as on of their many advantages to excelent smell.
Frost wolves also have a keen eye, giving them remarkable darkvision and low light vision, allowing them to see just as well in moonlight as they can during the day. Even while most canines see only in black and white, frost wolves can see the world in daylight in full color.
The most remarkable capability of the Frost wolf however, is how it recived its name. Each wolf has the ability to create a breath weapon, a cone of cold fifteen feet long, freezing its pray for it to drag back to its den to consume. Its bite also possesses cold capabilities, that it uses while its breath weapon takes its time to refresh.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Frost wolves usually speak in three separate languages. Common, in order to potentially gain allies or passage somewhere else, if the pack has to travel. Giant, given their close proximity to frost giants, and frost giant society. And finally, all Frost wolves speak an unspoken body language that they, and most other animals understand. Frost wolves prefer to speak in body language first, and ridicule those who cannot understand fluently.
