Hair has a meaning of intimacy of traditional Chinese culture. Several traditions concern the interaction between people and their and other people's hair.

  • Gifting someone a hair accessory is a sign of romantic interest or courtship
  • Placing a hair pin or hair stick in another person's hair directly is a sign of engagement (single prong) or marriage (double prong)
  • Prior to marriage, one wears their hair down (or half down). After marriage, hair is style up and off the neck.
