Nothing improves the loyalty of ordinary people more than descending from the skies in the middle of a town square.— Dwarven advertisement
Catapulting sure looks like a bizarre way of moving around, especially considering its popularity. Essentially, you would be thrown by a catapult somewhere; and then, once you have reached the required place, you would use an enchanted stone that casts some sort of levitation
magic on those who use it.
Catapulting was invented by the mountain dwarfs who sometimes needed to get from one of their settlements to another. To do so, they often had to go a long way around, sometimes going as far as to the foot of the mountain and all the way back up. That was especially annoying when the destination could have been easily seen.
Dwarves tried to use ropes as well, but the weather was against that. So, one of the lazy dwarfs came up with that crazy idea. It took some time for them to improve aim, but their advanced runic magic afforded for that way of transportation. It is way faster to be thrown to the next mountain than go all the way around, after all.
One day, a
human noble that was visiting the dwarfs took great interest in trying it himself. It went fine, and the happy and a little bit pale noble went back to his lands, bragging about the adventure he had. Soon after, more and more humans started to visit the dwarfs with the sole goal of experiencing the act of catapulting. Many activated the magic too early, being stuck halfway for a long time, one or two even died because of activating the magic too late, but that only spiced the competition. When almost everyone brave enough wanted to go and pay a considerable amount of money to be thrown from a catapult, the dwarfs came to the human realms with their catapults.
I did not pay that much money just for the prestige, my son. No, it is more complicated than that. Dwarven catapults are all high-quality items, and many do not perceive them as dangerous weapons those catapults really are.— Human noble
Nowadays, many wealthy families have their own catapults as well, usually located in manors and nearby towns. They are often just usual catapults, situated in places that are seen by many people. People do catapulting for three main reasons: to show their wealth, to prove their bravery and to impress common people. The prices for the magic involved are high and multiplying with the increase in quality of magic that the enchanted stone has in it.
Even the simple "Feather Fall" spell that allows you to descend slowly is popular to use; the sight of a noble descending in the town from the skies, in rich and beautiful dresses fluttering in the air, always impresses the crowd. Alternatively, one could purchase a spell of "Levitate", allowing to not only descend from the skies, but also to hover once you get low enough, or even a "Fly" spell, becoming someone who could rule over the very heavens. Well, at least that is how it seems to the peasants looking at the noble from below.
