Human (Hoo-man)

Everywhere and Many

"You say that we're only human? Well then, what does that make you when we have achieved as much if not more than your own people?"
Humans are one of those species that has somehow survived for millennia, outliving disasters and destruction among even the gods despite being so short lived compared to other races. But perhaps it is due to those shorter lives that they strive to achieve as much as they can in the years they are given. Or maybe they feel they have something when living in a world with elves, Dwarves, and giantkin. No matter the reason, humans have continuously built mighty empires on the foundation of conquest and trade. Whatever may drive them, humans are the innovators, achievers, and pioneers of Prima.   Humans have existed across the Material Plane since the gods scoured them around. Thanks to their adaptability, there are humans in the frigid cold of Upane, the humid jungles of Avenol, and the tropical Vortex Islands as well as many other places. They came not too long after the Dwarves and elves but rapidly spread out further than other races could keep up with.

A Broad Spectrum

With their penchant for migration and expansion, humans are more physically diverse than other races. Due to this, there is no typical human. Any individual can stand from 5 ft to a little over 6 ft tall and weigh anywhere from 125 to 250 pounds. Human skin shades range from nearly black to very pale, and hair colors from black to blond (curly, kinky, or straight). Males may sport facial hair that is either sparse or very thick. Many humans also have a dash of nonhuman blood, revealing hints of other lineages they have encountered over their millennia of existence on the same plane. Humans reach a physical state of adulthood in their late teens but rarely live even a single century. This makes them the shortest living, yet oldest race, in all of Prima.

Variety in All Things

Humans are the most adaptable and ambitious people among the common races. They have widely varying tastes, morals, and customs depending on where any group of humans originated from. When they settle, though, they stay, building civilizations that last for centuries. Any individual human might live a short time, but the human culture preserves traditions with origins stretching further than even some Dwarven customs. However, they live entirely in the present— making them well suited to the adventuring life —but also plan for the future, striving to leave a lasting legacy. Individually, and as a group, humans are opportunists and stay alert to changing political and social dynamics.

Lasting Institutions

Where a single elf or Dwarf may take on the responsibility of guarding unique locations or powerful secrets, humans create sacred orders and institutions for such purposes. While Dwarf clans and halfling elders pass on the ancient traditions to each new generation, human temples, governments, libraries, and codes of law fix their traditions in the bedrock of history. Humans dream of immortality, but (except for those few who seek undeath or divine ascension to escape death’s clutches) they achieve it by ensuring that they will be remembered when they are gone.   Although some humans can be xenophobic, in general their societies are inclusive. Human come second place in welcoming large numbers of nonhumans to their lands, coming second only to the giantkin of Skel.

Human Names and Ethnicities

Having so much more variety than other cultures, humans as a whole have no typical names. Some human parents give their children names from other languages, such as Dwarvish or Elvish (pronounced more or less correctly), but most parents give names that are linked to their region’s culture or to the naming traditions of their ancestors.   The material culture and physical characteristics of humans vary wildly from region to region. In Avenol, for example, the clothing, architecture, cuisine, music, and literature are different then in the sporadic Vortex Islands. Meanwhile, in the rain-battered kingdom of Skel, everything's even more distinctive. Human physical characteristics, though, change according to wherever in Prima they and their ancestors grew and adapted to.   In total, there are seven recognized ethnic groups of humans, although among them there are many subgroups that may be recognized in more local areas:

Nolla:

Shorter and slighter in build than most other humans, Nolla have dusky brown skin and hair with green eyes. They originate from Avenol's southern lands and are common neighbors of halflings and tabaxi.

Tusenvan:

Dominant to the region of Skel, the Tusenvan are generally tall, slim, and amber-skinned, with eyes of hazel or brown. Their hair ranges from black to dark brown but many Tusenvan end up shaving their heads entirely.

Boshen:

Found primarily in Bosher, they have a moderate height and build, with skin hues ranging from tawny to fair. Their hair is usually brown or black, and their eye color varies widely, with colors not common anywhere else.

Islatua:

Most often found among the Vortex Islands and intermingled with the Tusenvan, Islatua tend to be short, stout, and muscular. They usually have dusky skin, dark eyes, and thick black hair.

Casvulite:

Casvulite are slender, tawny-skinned folk with brown hair that ranges from almost blond to almost black. Most are tall and have green or brown eyes, but these traits are hardly universal. Humans of Casvulites make up a large amount of Leodaav and Se'Quona in general.

Ramila:

Ramila are tall, fair-skinned folk with blue or steely gray eyes. Most have raven-black hair, but those who inhabit the extreme northwest have blond, red, or light brown hair. They are more often found in northern Avenol near the deserts and coasts.

Uvenal:

Native to the mid and south regions of Upane, the Uvenal people are generally tall and muscular, with light skin, thicker hair, and dark eyes. They are more acclimated to the cold weather.
