Once he was able to provide enough money for his mother to get the flower shop back on its feet, he continued to adventure in hope to pay off future school debt for his little sister. The Memento family tree dates back many generations, starting with Memento Mori. Memento Mori was a teifling with more devil than man in his blood. Mori was executed at a young age for his crimes against all life on earth. Mori had one child who wore the name of Memento Vitae. Memento Vitae had several adventures throughout his life, the most influential being his last. Vitae teamed up with a paladin, a barbarian and a war forged druid named Pestle. The team of adventures fought an evil sorceress under the name of Praeteritum Recolit. Vitae found the truth of the situation, involving the painful past of Recolit. She was not evil, but had been driven down a dark path. Vitae and the team of adventures uncovered the man behind the marionette and fought him to the death. The man behind the strings did not walk away, for he never got up again. Recolit with her life goal of vengeance had been fulfilled. She now sought to live the rest of her life in solitude. Vitae had grown attached to Recolit and knew that being alone was the last thing she needed.
Vitae and Recolit had one child named Memento Caritate. Caritate had two children, one of which she named after Memento Vitae, and the other named Memento Ipsum. Vitae followed the path of flowers like his mother until the drought came. He was forced to take up adventuring to help put food on the table. After the florist shop got back on its feet, Vitae kept working as an adventure to help pay for school for his little sister.
Memento Vitae and the sorceress passed away in an unfortunate wagon incident. Memento Vitae was helping his grandparents (Memento Vitae Sr. and Recolit) deliver a shipment of magical items when their carriage hit a bump and rolled several times over. Vitae Sr. and Recolit were not as fortunate as Memento Vitae. Vitae waited for someone one to come, but help did not come. What did some was not here to help Vitae, but here to feed of the magic. The shipment attracted the attention of some Feywild spiders and they drained all the magical items of their magical properties and took Vitae Sr. and recolit's bodies as food for their young. Caritate followed her passion of flowers and became the first teifling florist in the village of Kilead.

A Wish to End the Pact
Vitae to The Traveler
Traveler I come to you without the burden of good news. I seek to end our pact. I can no longer uphold my end of the deal. The dream has died. The passion, crushed. I have been lost ever since. A lifeline has been tossed in front of me. I missed the first chance and I don’t want to miss the second. If I miss the second, the chance to find a purpose in life might not come again for quite some time. This path I wish to take, it requires I leave you. The good news is that you will still hear my story. Even if I can not send you prayers anymore, you will still hear my name. This path is foggy and unclear, but it’s a path I want to take. I might die or I might live to see my old years, I do not know what will happen.
The Prayer to Lolth
Vitae: Places a bat orchid on the floor
I love flowers. There is something about this one in particular that I hold with much value. Part of this is due to my ancestors. My grandfather was a rogue. If anyone ask, I would say he was a good man, but he did things many would consider evil. He saw someone seeking to burn a city to the ground. Instead of stopping them, he helped. He did not just help burn it down, he helped her find closure with the nightmares of her past. When the demon fell, she left the fray. My grandfather sought her out and brought her this exact kind of flower on their first date. He was not a great romantic, but appears that the flowers worked. This flower is different than most. Most would describe it as ugly, I do not. The beauty sometimes draws me away from the nightmares that haunt my thoughts.
These nightmares are more than just bad dreams. They haunt me every time I close my eyes. I have tried to ignore them but they don’t go away. They do not go away because I am the reason why they haunt me. I am afraid of not choosing the right path; afraid of disappointing my ancestors; afraid of disappointing myself.
If you asked me where I would be happy with my place in the world, two days ago, I would have told you “among the gods”. I sought out god hood, now I question myself more than ever before. I wanted to be a god of reprisal and curses, A god that fought usurpers, but I know that is wrong. When I was a child, my grandparents taught me about the gods. They told me I could worship whoever I chose, but I had to pick wisely since my soul would go to that god’s realm when I died. I gathered all the books and tales I could find, I wanted to know everything before I made my choice. To be honest, I was disappointed. I was worried it was going to be a hard choice, but only two gods caught my attention. One was The Traveler. I agreed with his philosophies. Good and evil is subjective, what some consider evil, other consider hungry. What some would consider a usurper, other would consider a hero. I would defend a demon just as I would defend an angel. The other was you Lolth.
All I had was one paragraph, and I knew you were the one. I spent my childhood hiding my feelings for you in worry that I would be treated worse. As you can see, I am a tiefling. My ancestor made a deal that I pay for. The people I grew up with, they were accepting but I was not blind. I saw the way they looked at me; I saw when the checked for their coin purse when I walked by; I noticed when other kids were told to stop playing with me; I noticed when they pretended not to see me. I have been told more information about you in the past three weeks that exceeds all of the information listed in the books of the gods in my home town. I have been told you are at war with every other plane. I have also been told you eat your worshipers. All of the information I have heard in the past few weeks have painted you in Ill light. All of this information has only reassured me that I have made the right choice. They have deemed you evil, they have condemned your teachings. I refuse to let others tell me what is good and evil.
I sought this Medusa’s curse as a stepping stone. It was my first step of countless along the path to godhood. I realize now that the reasons I sought such power was flawed. I believe that violence breeds more violence, yet I thought of shaking the realms. I believe good and evil is subjective, yet I was considering condemning those I considered usurpers. It was not until today that I realized this, I have you to thank for that. Penguin knows about your plans to siege Zargos. I know that you sacked the hometown of one of my party members. I am not upset. I was surprised to find that I was ok with everything. Almost every form of civilization is born of taking territory from someone else. If someone would condemn someone else while pretending their homep lace is not in question, they are wrong.
So much has happened and for the first time in my life, I can not foresee my future plans. I don’t have anything more to say other than I have not given up on you. I just need to put my head back together. I wish good fortune for you and your plans with Zargos.
Vitae to Lolth After Being Ignored
Lolth, I am beginning to think you are ignoring me. I am beginning to think that you will hope that I will go away. I think I figured out why. Just a few moments ago I found my title and picture in the tikipedia. If you worry, let me shine some light on the subject. When I was young, my grandparents taught me about the gods. They told me that I could choose whatever god I wanted to follow but told me that my soul would go to their realm so I had to think before I picked. I went through all gods and only two spoke out to me. One of which was The Traveler. I agreed with his beliefs and teachings. I would defend a demon just as I would defend an angel. Good and bad are subjective. What is evil to some is just hungry to others. The other that spoke out to me was you. The information presented to me was minimal and it took me a long time to figure out what made you stand out to me. I sought to know more before I committed to an offering. The information I found spoke ill of you and told me of the wars you face. If someone falls down, I offer my hand regardless if they can get up by themselves. Whether that person is man, woman, or machine; whether that person is human, dwarf, elf, drow, medusa, or spider. It does not matter who fell or if they can get themselves back up. I offer my hand because I will be that light in the dark.
Lolth, I am like a gnat flying around a rotting corpse. You can swat at me or try to ignore me, but I am not going away. You might think that if you ignore me long enough that this gnat will die of old age, but I am no regular gnat. This curse I have grants me immortality. I may not have it now but this curse gets stronger as I grow in power. This gnat will keep growing until that little gnat is no longer something that can be ignored. I seek to shake all of the realms. I will be that hand in the dark to lead those who have lost their way. I will drag out every usurper from the comfort of their beds and make an example of them. They will spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulder and checking under their bed for monsters like me. This goal will be long and painful, but if there is an ally I would want to be at my side, it is you.
Vitae to Lolth with an offering of Hemlock
There is beauty in danger. I have brought an offering this time. What I bring is not of wealth or of valuable resources, for I have neither. I bring an offering of thought and meaning. There is a beauty to danger; beauty in the sharp edge of a knife; beauty in the flames that flicker off a torch; beauty in the traps woven in silk; beauty in the poison of flowers I offer. The hemlock is as beautiful as it is dangerous. It contains a neurotoxin that causes death from a collapse of the lungs. Ingestion of even small amounts of this flower can be fatal. The meaning of flowers run deep in my family. They have brought us hope in trying times, for they remind us of our past. I have crawled up from the bottom, I wither in each step I take. Withering for those who need a hand in the dark. With all this pain, I can only wish that I do not lose my way. I hope these bring you some happiness in these trying times.
Vitae to The Traveler after receiving the Medusa's curse
Hello Traveler, this curse has brought much pain but I thank you for hearing my call. My lips bring me more pain that I would want to admit. I miss my hair as well. My sight has been a big problem but it reminds me of why I sought this curse. The pain is great but I knew what I was asking for. I had the pleasure of talking to someone also suffering from the Medusa’s curse yesterday. I am currently on a quest to help find her children. I worry that finding her children may bring her more pain than if they had just gone missing. This moon plague is devastating countless lives. I do have to say I was not expecting my lips to split. I do not know what it means but I fear it is due to the devil and possible incubus blood that runs in my veins.
Vitae to Lolth after receiving the medusa's curse
Hello again. I am different from what I once was, I have become a monster. If the chance ever happens, don’t look at my eyes. I have accepted a quest to save a medusa’s children. She seems like a nice person and I could not refuse help to someone suffering when I am more than capable of lessening their pain. My comrades do not see you in good light. I do not know much about you either but I trust my gut, and it tells me that this is right. I am in a lot of pain from my deformations and suffering from unexpected issues of this curse. I can feel the breeze on my teeth every time I go outside. I miss my sight. I could look but I don’t want to petrify innocents. My lips crack and burn. I fear that they have split far past the normal amount. I have been told that it is like a snake’s mouth but I can only trust what others tell me I look like. This pain is crippling but it reminds me why I do what I do. I don’t have any offerings this time but I hope you are doing well. Let me know if you ever need some lip balm. It appears I might have bought a bit too much at the market today.
I wish good fortune and prosperity for you.
Prayer to Lolth after the spider airship incident
Lolth, if you hear this, I am sorry.
I tried to protect them, I really tried.
I was weak.
(pause as Vitae’s eyes start to water)
I tried but I watched as they all died. The one that lived, it was not even by my hands.
(Vitae takes a second to regain his composer)
I did not send a prayer to distract you with my self-pity. I have just had a lot on my mind recently. I have heard about the war with the Nine Hells, and the many other realms that surround Gehenna. That does not sound good. I hope you are doing well. In times of war, it can be hard to find joy. I do not have a physical offering as I did last time, but I wish prosperity and good fortune for you in these trying times.
Prayer of Reprisal
Vitae to the Traveler
Traveler, if you can hear me, I offer you an offering unlike anything else. I offer you a story, the likes of which you have never heard. This story is still taking place, but to start with the beginning. I am a walking contradiction. My great ancestor made a deal that cursed him and all of his future generations. I pay for this deal with the curse. I do not call this a curse; I call it a blessing. I use my curse to give me an advantage over those who don’t.
Traveler I seek power, but I am not like everyone else. I don’t seek power for myself, no, I seek it for others. I seek power to help those who cannot help themselves. I don’t seek power for my own selfish needs or self-interest, I seek to become the last bastion for those in dire straits. I have no interest in treasure, money, or political power. Nothing brings me more joy than making others happy.
This power I seek is not called power by everyone else. This power is a curse. This curse makes life hell, a never-ending hell. People live their whole lives hoping they never see this curse; they hope their children and their children’s children never see this curse. Most will run in terror, beg and plead when they know that this curse was on the table. I am not like the others.
I know all power comes at a cost. I will pay a heavy toll. I may end up dying to this curse. Even if this is short-lived, it will be a story that will never be forgotten. A story told to children, not to scare them at night, but to teach them not to take from others who cannot defend themselves. I seek to be a monstrous guardian. I seek to be the thing that keeps those up at night who take from those who have nothing.
Traveler, they are weak, without hope, without light, without a hand in the dark. I seek this eternal hell so I can be that hand in the dark, that light at the end of the tunnel. They are alone, I will be their last bastion. Curse me with the Medusa's curse and I will show you what a man with a passion and a wish can do. Pass me the torch and I will light the fire.
