Monocle of Souls

This magical monocle has a strange warmth to it, and a small engraving of a stylized letter 'D' is found on the end of the chain.  As an action, the monocle may be used to inspect another creature's Soul, revealing an answer to one of the questions listed below.  A willing target can be inspected for free, but creatures who are either unwilling or unaware expend one charge from the monocle per question.  The monocle has a maximum of four charges, and regains 1d4-1 charges each time you take a long rest.
  • What type of creature is this? (humanoid, fey, celestial, fiend, etc.)
  • Which other creature(s), if any, have a claim on this creature's Soul?
  • Which deity, if any, does this creature serve? (In the rare case that the target serves multiple deities, only the strongest association is revealed)
  • Is the creature in possession of more than one Soul?  (If yes, further examinations can be performed on the additional soul(s) that may be present within the target)
  • Which plane is the target most likely to spend their afterlife in?
Unaware targets may make a DC15 wisdom save to become aware that something is happening to them.  Unwilling targets who are aware of the inspection may attempt to contest it by rolling either Religion or Deception (their choice) against your Insight check.  If the target successfully defends themselves in this way, you gain no meaningful information and cannot attempt to inspect the same creature again for 24 hours, unless they later choose to consent to it.
