Sending Stations
Sending stations are large facilities the size of a house that are capable of quickly sending large volumes of information between each other. There are only a few such stations in the world, but others are being built and soon every nation will have at least one. They are typically not available for public use and are instead restricted to communication between national governments or other wealthy institutions. Despite the name, the Sending spell is not actually involved. Instead an operator speaks into a large pool and their words are sent through The Void to another sending station, where an operator records the message and arranges for delivery to the intended recipient.
The technology is not without its flaws, however, and sometimes messages are intercepted by other entities from the the outer planes, the Far Realms, or even one of the Forms. These entities will respond to questions they receive, but the answers are often vague and obtuse. In addition receiving a response from such an entity will sometimes overwhelm the equipment, causing physical or mental harm to the operator sending the original message. Because of this, operating a sending station is considered highly dangerous work. Operators sometimes go insane and become violent, and so they work under armed guard at all times.
