Vampirism

Vampirism is a complex and multifaceted condition in which a humanoid grows fangs and must feed on the blood of others to survive.  Many myths and rumors surround vampires, and the exact nature of their abilities is not well known.  What follows, however, is a a brief summation of how vampires behave in the world of Prima.

Physical Effects

  • Vampirism causes the body to become significantly more powerful, increasing strength, dexterity, and constitution to 18 if they are not already higher
  • The body becomes resistant to nonmagical weapons
  • The complexion grows pale and visible fangs grow in their moths.  This becomes more pronounced if the vampire has not fed recently, but most choose to cover it up by magical means of various kinds.
  • well-fed vampires do not suffer from exhaustion penalties unless exposed to direct sunlight or running water

Supernatural Changes

  • Vampires need not consume normal food or drink, though they may choose to do so
  • They gain some simple shapeshifting, capable of becoming either a bat or a cloud of mist at will when not exposed to sunlight or running water
  • Upon reaching 0 hit points, the vampire becomes a cloud of mist if it is capable of doing so.  If this cloud makes it back to its resting place, the vampire can slowly reconstitute itself
  • well-fed vampires rapidly regenerate themselves if not in sunlight, running water, or recently suffered from radiant damage
  • vampires gain a powerful charm ability that persists for up to 24 hours against a single target at a time
  • The vampire can't enter a residence without an invitation from one of the occupants.
  • The vampire burns when exposed to sunlight or large volumes of running water

Mental Effects

  • Vampires are immortal, and over time this has an effect on the psyche.  As they grow older they tend to become highly intelligent as they continue to gain knowledge over the centuries.  They also tend to become very confident in their own abilities, sometimes to the point of narcissism.
  • Even the recently infected tend to grow obsessive to various degrees, especially with regards to hobbies and loved ones
