Elemental Plane of Earth

It is a place of hidden riches. It is a wall against all foes. It is a grave for the greedy.
— Wanderer of the planes
The Elemental Plane of Earth was an infinite expanse of solid matter pockmarcked by bubbles of other elements and riddled with fissures and tunnels created by burrowing creatures or the occasional small mining operation. Solid does not imply stationary: the substances of this plane were constantly moving in a slow, grinding motion punctated by earthquakes from small to massively violent upheavals.   Air could be found in scattered pockets but unbreathable gasses were also present. Unprepared travelers lucky enough to arrive in a cavern might slowly aphyxiate while the unlucky quickly are suffocted by being buried alive.   There was little way of travel between pockets, requiring either the use of magics that allowed movement through solid matter. Other alternatives were to travel the plane via the Border Ethereal or, if one travels from the Astral Sea via a Astral Projection spell, one could move through walls of the plane. However, this did not solve all issues, since being able to pass through the stone rendered one effectively blind unless magic that could see through solid matter was used, or until one found a place where darkvision, or light could be used. Conversely, hearing was enhanced while encased in earth, to the point where travelers could detect any movement through the rock within a certain radius of their position.   Gravity was predictable but strange compared to the material plane. The general direction of gravity was mostly the same, however travelers could feel themselves heavier than before. Additionally, the stone that encased most of the plane was affected by a strange gravity of its own, being drawn towards living things. This meant, if one were not carfeul and lost focus, or attempted rest in area where this traits was not held at bay, they could quickly get swallowed by the earth itself, leading to suffocation.   Every type of rock, soil, mineral, metal ore, sand, or dirt was known to be found here in abundance. Mining operations tended to be short-lived because the movement of the solid matter of the plane and intense gravity quickly caused cave-ins. The dao were the only people known to successfully manage large continous mining operations in the plane.

Inhabitants

Similar to the other elemental planes, it was common that the substance of the plane itself came alive, forming earth elementals more intelligent than on the material plane. These were the most numerous type of creature in the plane. Other creatures looked like rough-hewn statues of animals from the material plane, or animated crystalline forms.   The most notable creature other than the earth elementals were the dao, genies of earth who managed mining operations across the plane, mercilessly using slave labor to dig and repair their cities and mines. The dao were known to enslave travellers for this purpose, or to sell the slaves to the Ifrit, the genies of fire.   All natives and some creatures with an affinity to earth could move through the plane like a fish swimming through water, the rock flowing around them and closing back up again, leaving no tunnel.
