Ingrid Bugenhagen

Sculptor of Light and Feeling

by Allison Padilla MysticismToday.com Mysticism Today Magazine   The tea is an imported variety from Otherworld served in a Victorian era bone China cup. I have to stir my honey with a mundane, albeit silver, spoon while my hostess silently stirs her with a glowing spoon made of light blue hard light. With a gesture, the spoon dissipates and Ingrid giggles.   "I've been asked if that was the Twelfth Light of Luathon," she says in her barely noticeable German accent before taking a slow sip from her cup. "Somehow, I don't think Luathon would have given Thanoro Azoic a spell simply to stir his tea."   We move to her living room with a stunning view of Manhattan that only the rich can afford, while the room itself becomes a private viewing area for two figure studies of women in motion, forever captured in pure, white hard light. As we sit upon soft, fine leather upholstered couches, I can already feel the emotions captured in this work; a heady feeling of wonder, amazement and even a touch of arousal. Ingrid explains that a dancer posed for the work and was actually one of the first times she tried to capture the sense of a human body in motion both from the emotional aspect of the subject and the viewer. There is no doubt in my mind that she succeeded. I ask her if we will ever see this piece on display for the public to view but she shakes her head.   "This one is far too personal for me to share except for friends and special guests to my home."
All great artists pour their feelings, their passions and some would say even their souls into their work in the hopes of conveying those very ephemeral concepts to the viewer. Ingrid doesn't have to worry that art lovers will not be able to feel what she wants them to feel since her work emanates those emotions, feelings and insight that were captured at the moment of creation. Most galleries have to take some extraordinary precautions not to allow the public to get too close to many of her pieces for fear of being overcome by the intensity of the emotions captured within the piece. Of course, this emotional intensity is precisely what many art collectors around the world approach her for commissions.
"I've turned a few of them down due to the nature of the emotions they wanted to capture. They were dark, corrupt and perverse for the sake of it," she says, not a little disgusted. "I want my work to celebrate the joys and pains of life, and not the degradations of the soul."   That celebration of life's joys and pains has been captured in the centerpiece of her latest exhibition. A incredible sculpture of blues emerging from a bowl that twist together and yet seem to be separated from the other until they come together in a homogenous sphere at the top. It's called "Love at First Sight".   "It's certainly a personal work, certainly something that many of us have experienced," she says. "It's a chaotic and yet symetrical feeling, happiness and uncertainty with fears of loss and missed opportunities but yet, sometimes, it all comes together in a beautiful moment."
