Candle of Calyxal

Summary

The legend potrayes the love of Lana and Ranja for each other. Unfortunately they had to keep their feelings secret. In order to do so both women would meet deep in the forest of Calyxal.
Everytime one of them would look for a hidden spot and light up a candle which should guide the significant other the way through the dark but also large woods. The opposite lover would follow the light with a second candle to make herself recognizebly.

Many years the women managed to meet without getting caught. But with every hour. With every kiss their craving for love and lust growth. To satisfy their needs Lana and Ranja meet noticeably repeatedly. Noticeably to be said since one of the hunters who lived in the same village discovered the glowing candle.
One night he curiousely followed the vivid light. Without hesitation he chased the candle. Oddly the hunter never reached it. Somehow the shinning object moved rapidly away from him.
Suddenly the light vanished. Surprised the stalker ran to it. He ended up at a cliff. In the dim light of his torch he saw a body laying on the ground. Afraid he ran away.

After some time he saw a second light dancing in the darkness. Immediatly the hunter tried to follow the light. Arlamed the candle ceased.
Apperently he was so fixed on the light that he got lost in the woods. He died of starvation later. However the other woman who the hunter had chased suffered from a similiar end.

Legend says that Lanas and Ranjas spirits are roaming in Caxyal to find eachother again. Sadly they never get close to each other since they assume to be stalked by the hunter and the woman who fell of the cliff lost her candle.
The hunter himself is searching for the lights in order to bring them back together.
But without the second candle the ghosts of the lovers will never be side by side.

Historical Basis

The woods of Calyxal

Regretfully the legend is based on a true occassion. Lana and Ranja lived in a small village in the Moreswall region. After both went missing, people tried to find them. They only found the body of Lana which fell of the cliff. The body of Ranja and the hunter, a young man called Torth Coryn, were never found. Incidental they found the candle of Lana which had been placed inside her crypt.

Spread

The legend is very famous by lovers all over the empire. Mostly it is spread in Vandaryen where it is a common story told by juggler or other storytellers.

Variations & Mutation

In one version people tell that the lost candle and Ranjas body have to be brought to Lanas crypt to rest the ghosts. In another variation both spirits can only get together when someone finds the lost candle and handles it over to Ranja.

Cultural Reception

Romantic tellers often say that the one who finds the lost candle will find their one true soulmate. Additionally, if you use the candle instead to bring the both lovers back together they will protect you and your significant other.
