Sableists of Greil
Devotion to Greil is centered around the worship of the fierce deity of ice, snow, and hardship. They are most often revered by the Anorn of Cerln. The Anorn believe that Greil is a powerful and unpredictable entity, capable of bringing both bounty and destruction to all people.
The followers of Greil believe that the deity controls the harsh winters of Cerln, and that through devotion and sacrifice, they can appease Greil and gain its favor. They offer prayers and burn effigies of Greil during the winter solstice, asking for protection and guidance through the long, cold months ahead.
Those that revere Greil are members of a larger religion known as Sableism. Sableism is steeped in tradition, and the Anorn have developed many rituals and ceremonies to honor Greil and other deities within the pantheon. In regards to Greil, rituals often involve the use of ice and snow, as well as offerings of food and drink to the deity.
One of the most important traditions of the religion of Greil is a dangerous ritual involving a select few Anorn whom venture out into the frozen wasteland of Cerln, seeking to prove their devotion to Greil by walking across a treacherous river of ice. Those who complete what is known as the Pilgrimage of Seuran are seen as blessed by the deity and are often given positions of honor within their community. Those that do not complete the journey are cast out of their community, given as sacrifices to Greil.
The Sableists of Greil believe that death is not an end, but merely a transformation. They believe that the spirits of their ancestors continue to watch over them from the icy realm of Greil, and that by living a life of devotion and sacrifice, they might honor their ancestors, their descendants, and their deity.
Adherents of Greil are both feared and respected by the Anorn of Cerln, and their influence can be felt in every aspect of Anorn culture.
