The Oath Circle
Before the Silveisean invasion during the first migration of the Telruin, the circle came into being. It was once thought that the religious practices were held by the Olna-nen and absorbed by the Telruin. In truth the practices are much older and tied to the Vrolua that roamed the frozen landscape.
The animal bone masks have been handed down since the beginning of the Masked Age. The lords that wear them believe that the mask binds them to the natural world and that through this bond they can affect a great amount of change when the stars align. The power of each mask is greatly enhanced through the arcane use of bide stones.
At one time the Oath Circle was hundreds of members strong. At the height of its power, the group changed the landscape of Bheid and Sunlen to suit their needs. This included everything from routing wildlife to managing the Algren forest paths called innerways. The lords of Telruin assimilated with their new realm and became shepherds of it.
The followers of this religion take oaths to the natural world before they are allowed to join and are known as troths among members. Not all troths are allowed to wear masks, this honor belonging only to the masked lords. The masked lords are allowed to conduct rituals on behalf of all troths. Many troths fall under the banner of one masked lord or another. A troth that does not belong to a lord is known as being vowless. When a troth is vowless, they are granted certain rights and protections by all in the circle. They are given the right of hospitality at any lord's table. They are granted the right of free passage through a lord's land. Finally, they are provided with protection from any that might harass them in a lord's land. These protections exist to bring vowless back into the ring of the circle, to ease their passage from one lord to another, and to give lord's the ability to prove themselves as worthy leaders.
Blood and bone be honored.
