The Sala
In Baruilden, one would be hard pressed to find outsiders except at the coastline where the ports are more tolerant of other groups of people. The Sala Shamans have secured the interior of the continent's religious needs for more than 10,000 years because of this very fact. Through blood and bone the shamans believe that they are integral to the weave of creation and that they have the power to place and remove souls from this tapestry at will.
The shamans have to accommodate for various local beliefs and traditions. Therefore it is possible to travel Baruilden and meet a different Sala Shaman performing rituals that seem distinct and new. The Sala hold commonalities within their religion. Members of their flock all believe in something called the Sala Tapestry. It is a vast, astral tapestry which contains the souls of every person in existence.
Sala shamans have an assistant which interprets the trancelike state that the shaman enters during rituals. This interpretation is very often a recounting of the Sala Tapestry and the sick individual's place upon it. In order to perform healing services to the sick, the shaman must remove the soul from the tapestry and then replace it farther along the weave. They perform this with the Sala knife, a tool of their trade. A small cut across the back of the forearms is made, this releases the soul. The wounds are allowed to bleed while chants are performed. When the individual is healed, the shaman will replace them onto the tapestry by closing the wounds with a special dressing.
