Wisps

The quiet wisps are immortal beings that have inhabited Prominence since the time before recorded history. Wisps can only communicate with the light that they generate. They also seem to understand language. Wisps are ephemeral and mostly harmless entities. Some wisps have even been known to hold court with nobles. They have no need of food, water, sleep, or air. It’s not understood what keeps a wisp alive. It’s also not understood how they die, or if they die at all.
Wisps tend to congregate in dark places, like forests at nightfall, the insides of caves, and the ocean on a moonless night. Wisps have not been known to cause direct harm to others, however it's good advice not to follow a wisp. Since they cannot be harmed by anything, they wander through terrain that is dangerous to others, emerging on the other side unscathed.
There are many legends about seeing the wisps on an ill-lit innerway. They seem to favor the pathways of the ancient giants. None are sure why.
