"We sing the songs of the ballad-monger, the one who gives the gift of melody. You look like you could do with a bit of song yourself, you know..."— Unknown
The Taleteller in the Tavern
Through the eyes of an audience member, nearly anything is possible when spun in the harmonies of prose, when you feel that sense of joy, cheer, and companionship that you can be certain is felt throughout the rest of the crowd. Be it a dark tale of your fears come to find you or a exciting journey of finding love, the atmosphere that settles on the people listening is electrifying.
Whether you believe in Íslen or not, the one thing you cannot deny is that electric atmosphere that pulls everyone into understanding how everyone else feels in that moment. Many believe that the presence of Íslen can only be felt through music, a notion quickly dismissed as false nonsense by his followers as Íslen permeates story or song, tale or trilling.
The Force of Sound
While there are many ways that one may pay homage to the Verse-maker, there is one time honoured tradition amongst the bards of the Eight Lands, even those who do not truly believe in him. That tradition is one of beginning every performance by engaging in a form of song called lilting, when heard it sounds akin to nonsense words, however it's not much different to humming. Best performed by a pair or more of bards, they may decide to create a fictional story by their actions and tune throughout their starting performance that then leads them into their first actual song of the night.
Belonging is what one can find when they enter any given tavern, or sit in the audience of a bards performance on the streetside, in an amphitheater, or in the town green. Belonging is what everyone strives to hold in their hands at some point in their life, a sense that they are exactly where they are meant to be, a part of a community, even just for a few moments during a performance.
It matters not where you find it, but that the atmosphere that allows it is present, an atmosphere gifted by the Verse-maker.
The literal God of Music. Very well written. Can imagine the bards humming the lilting in front of everyone in lets say an amphietheater. Love it ^-^
Glad you enjoyed it! Once I got rolling with it, it turned out pretty good!
