Íslen

"We sing the songs of the ballad-monger, the one who gives the gift of melody. You look like you could do with a bit of song yourself, you know..."

The Taleteller in the Tavern

Through the eyes of an audience member, nearly anything is possible when spun in the harmonies of prose, when you feel that sense of joy, cheer, and companionship that you can be certain is felt throughout the rest of the crowd. Be it a dark tale of your fears come to find you or a exciting journey of finding love, the atmosphere that settles on the people listening is electrifying.   Whether you believe in Íslen or not, the one thing you cannot deny is that electric atmosphere that pulls everyone into understanding how everyone else feels in that moment. Many believe that the presence of Íslen can only be felt through music, a notion quickly dismissed as false nonsense by his followers as Íslen permeates story or song, tale or trilling.

The Force of Sound

While there are many ways that one may pay homage to the Verse-maker, there is one time honoured tradition amongst the bards of the Eight Lands, even those who do not truly believe in him. That tradition is one of beginning every performance by engaging in a form of song called lilting, when heard it sounds akin to nonsense words, however it's not much different to humming. Best performed by a pair or more of bards, they may decide to create a fictional story by their actions and tune throughout their starting performance that then leads them into their first actual song of the night.   Belonging is what one can find when they enter any given tavern, or sit in the audience of a bards performance on the streetside, in an amphitheater, or in the town green. Belonging is what everyone strives to hold in their hands at some point in their life, a sense that they are exactly where they are meant to be, a part of a community, even just for a few moments during a performance.   It matters not where you find it, but that the atmosphere that allows it is present, an atmosphere gifted by the Verse-maker.

The literal God of Music. Very well written. Can imagine the bards humming the lilting in front of everyone in lets say an amphietheater. Love it ^-^

Nice article and well written! It is intersting how this god manifests itself more through the general atmosphere and feeling that people get. Must also be quite fun to see the humming before singing :p

I'm happy to know you had fun reading it, and yep! Loads of people in Pronathea love the lilting portion of performances!

Really like the tradition of lilting... i imagine there are particular fans who are more into these freeform warm ups than the songs proper. A festival of lilt, with all the bards taking turns... that'd be cool. Nice work! :-)

Glad you liked it! There may well be some form of lilt-off somewhere in Pronathea too!

I like it. The tradition performed by the bards sounds very cool. The only thing I would add is some information about the deity as a person (if they are in such a form, maybe they are just a force?)

They are more a force than a person, but that doesn't mean they aren't sometimes the bard you're watching perform!

Good article on the God of Music.   couple of notes and then the questions. while they are in separate paragraphs, you have 2 sentences in a row that start with "whether" (blame my composition class right now for me even noticing) I would change the first one to be (BE it a dark tale...) for a little bit better word flow.   "...presence of Íslen can only be felt through music, a notion quickly dismissed as true by his followers as Íslen permeates story or song, tale or trilling." seems to contradict itself. is it dismissed as false, or is it true. the end of the sentence seems to imply it is false leading to the confusion (story or song)   But the tradition of lilting. that is so COOL! As with others i can see that turning into a festival or competition in its own right. perhaps with scribes attending the festival to pen new plays, bards freely wandering from one stage to another joining in when the inspiration strikes.   I do perhaps wish there was more on Islen himself. A short story, or his symbols or holy days. Overall great job.

Made a couple fixes, I appreciate the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and more might get added in the future, so look out for that!

I really liked how you describe that atmosphere music can create. It can be something very magical, even in our world!   Really nicely written! Keep up the great work!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, finding a way to represent him was tough but I do like how he turned out!

I like the easiness with which it reads and the mystery and uncertainty colours with which the image of the Verse-maker is painted. I would love to know more about him and the little subtleties to the Belonging if it applies — does it depend on the singer or scale?   I want to know if Íslen exists or is he just a construct and at the same time don't want to learn to keep the feeling of mystery (kind of like J. J. Abrams and his "magic box").

It's the sense of belonging that you get in places, like you're meant to be there, it's not an effect that he creates, it's just part of the atmosphere that surrounds music and liveliness, the same atmosphere that is attributed to Islen

Nice article! Lilting is a cool idea :D ad I like the idea of the god being a presence when people practice music. Is he always present, even if different people make some music at the same time in different places, or does he have to choose where he can be? Does he have some favourite type of music? Lilting?   I'd like to know what his priests know/think about him too :D

He's thought to be anywhere there's music or liveliness. Not all cultures believe in him, and even then not all people in a culture will believe in him, but those who do believe he's there. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it!

Really interesting take for the challenge! I'm curious about how that god came to be, and what kind of god he is meant to be- is he the "best bard", a manifestation of music, a mix of both? Does he help musicians be better, or is he manifested by hard working musicians?

He's the atmosphere that comes from music and liveliness, so that ecstatic sense of being in the right place when you're listening to fantastic music at a concert or just with a bunch of people means he's there amongst everyone. If you believe in him, you aim for that feeling of ecstasy, you aim to bring Islen to your music, and if you don't believe in him then you're just having some fun!

I really like the idea of the tradition of lilting. That sounds like it would be fun to hear/watch. :D

For a relatively minor part of a bards show, a lot of practice goes into being able to do it well!
