Akranes

The Blue City of the South

The Icy Passage

The iced passage strewed with icebergs and castoff debris from iced over shorelines leading up to Akranes is a place desolate of almost anything, the bare shoreline and the drifting icebergs being the only landmarks in a crystal blue sea. The passage is one of the most difficult ship lanes to pass through, and an inexperienced sailor could find themselves at the bottom of the ocean if they aren't careful. The shoreline of Akranes is dotted with remnants of ships and boats left long ago, the hardwood rotting and decaying slowly over time.   The city itself is a sight to behold, though quite plain. The longhouses near the water's edge have long since been turned to stone, the need to suddenly pick up and move long forgotten. As the city grew, it didn't expand upward, it only moved outward, becoming more and more of a sprawl than an actual city. Through the centuries, Akranes has become a thriving centre for hardwood, even more so than the iron-like oak of Horn.

The Sprawl

Akranes has no real design to it, as it expands out of need. Though there isn't any semblance of organization to it, the people of Akranes know every nook and cranny like the back of their hands and are able to navigate its sprawling passageways and crevice-like alleys with ease.   The people of Akranes are hardy folk and seem almost able to fell a tree with a single punch. They live off of fish and the limited flora and fauna available to them on the island of Durmouth, though they are careful to not hunt or gather to extinction. Some of their foodstuffs are supplemented by shipments from Bihulling and Horn, though most of it is either grown from plants that are exceptionally hardy for the environment or from the animals hunted.

What leads every single one of the citizens to be cautious with resources? The usual behavior would be for everyone to store as much as they could possibly need. Surely, it would lead to the extinction of the city in the long term, but there must be some form of organization to prevent this, right?
