"You see, the demapost isn't just some random creature. It's..."— Unknown
Thorn in the Heart
The demapost is a creature not fully understood, it is constantly evolving, shifting its being so that it can never become hunted.
What begins as a tightly wrapped coil of thorned vines, quickly evolves into a mass of roiling brush and saplings. It absorbs and replaces its body constantly, shedding what it no longer needs and harnessing what it requires from its environment, to keep its core safe. If it no longer requires a tough exterior and instead wishes to be able to move itself rapidly from branch to branch, it may shed the bark it carries and in its stead attach loose vines to itself.
To kill a demapost, you must sever the coiled sphere of thorned vines that lies as its heart. If you do not sever them, it will only come back nastier than it was before, or even split it into two demaposts.
A Prickly Encounter
While demaposts are generally found within forests and jungles, it isn't unheard of for them to appear in swamps, cities, or lakesides.
Because of their constantly shifting nature, there is very little in the way of environments that they cannot adapt to, however they do only require a source of water to be nearby so that they may keep themselves alive. Whether it be fresh lake water, a stream, a wellspring, or even barrels of rainwater, demaposts are not particularly fussy.
They are unable to breed, and are usually created by focused areas of nature magic across the Eight Lands, though they can be forced into existence as well by druids. It is very rare for a druid to attempt to bring a demapost into existence, as unless they had some specific goal in mind for them, they would be difficult to control. Demaposts are unruly creatures, and at times can abandon any sense of direction that they would otherwise hold.
Very cool. Reminds me somewhat of the Mistwraiths of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn world, though definitely distinct.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'll have to have a look at what Mistwraiths are to see how similar they are to my demaposts!
