Become a werewolf by drinking rainwater out of the footprint of a werewolf or otherwise consuming werewolf saliva.

Gevaudan locks his people in cages on the full moon. The vampires know this and attack the werewolves so some werewolves stay out to defend.
It is nothing more than pure willpower that allows werewolves to stay somewhat conscious in their wolf form.
