Clan Jenos

Intro

Clan Jenos was an ancient Clan that stormed the majority of Qelur, beginning the First Unification. A Western clan, headed by Willem Jenos I, they used their superior seafaring technology and a variety of diplomatic means to secure supreme power over the continent. Indeed, it was Willem Jenos that crated the very idea of the 'King' of Qelur: where before there had only been separate empires, now there was one overruling entity.

This was hailed as the doom of the world by many, but by many others as a good thing, an office created to end sparring and bloodshed between the Clans forever. Under Jenos' rule, Qelur became closer. Rival Clans or Tribes were wary of stirring up too much trouble, and there was an effective policing force to keep crime down. However, with the position of King came many riches, and with them, lust.

Structure

Clan Jenos was quite unusual in its structure among other clans. While it still had one leader (chief), instead of having the best military commanders as generals and tribe leaders, the Jenos Clan had a tradition of appointing the eldest three men of the core Clan. Their huge success is often attributed to the loyalty and unity that this family structure created. The roles went as follows:
  • Chief (usually occupied by eldest male member
  • Two lieutenants (occupied by the brothers, cousins or uncles of the chief)
  • About 10 Sergeants (usually those who had proven themselves to be good military leaders, or the clan's best fighters)
  • Tribal Leaders (the heads of the families under the Jenos Clan)
The tribes themselves were left largely to govern themselves, although once a year they were made to travel to wherever the Chief Jenos was in order to re-swear their allegiance.

Territories

Clan Jenos was once a tribe of Clan Guion. Their capital city was Shang, and they occupied all the neighbouring islands. However, it was claimed that a distant ancestor had been cheated out of his inheritance. As such, the leader of Clan Jenos (Willem Jenos) decided to attempt to "retake our ancestral grounds". He stirred up his family units and those that had sworn allegiance to him. He appointed close family members to positions of importance. He visited the cities, villages and castles of his bannermen in order to encourage them of the prizes that awaited. He married into new families by trading off his daughter's, sister's, and several cousin's hands in marriage.

Soon, he had amassed a large group of soldiers around Shang and the nearby islands. Most historians put this number at about 25,000, but some estimate as high as 40,000. The majority of these men, having been raised and trained in the Western Isles and archipelagos, were strong and cunning amphibious fighters. Clan (or back then, Tribe) Jenos had built a reputation for their advanced boating techniques. It was widely known that A Jenos' boat could outrun any other, and that they made so little disturbance in the water that shoals of fish would come to the surface without worry. Given these pre-existing advantages, it was no great surprise when the close islands of (NEEDED AND NEEDED) fell under the hulls of the great Jenos ships.

Soon, the whole northern part of the Western Isles was under Jenos' control. At this time, they declared themselves a Clan, not a tribe, and Willem Jenos himself their Chief. He sent a clear message to the leader of Clan Guion at the time, NEEDED: Retire as overlord of the West, or be killed. Naturally, Clan Guion didn't take this threat too seriously. After all, what would a mighty Corner Leader care about the spats of some fishing villages? Ultimately, it was this pride that lead to their downfall.

Within a matter of months, Clan Jenos had taken land stretching up to NEEDED, and were now knocking on Fyr's door. They began to take the threat a bit more seriously. Calling on their banners, Clan Guion was able to muster up about 17,500 men. They believed that this should be more than enough to cull the rebellion of some angry fishermen. They set up large strongholds at NEEDED, NEEDED and NEEDED, and sent out their navy to gaurd the crossings between them. The coast seemed clear for many weeks.

Unbeknownst to Clan Gion, Willem Jenos had been constructing many large boats for some time. These boats could carry more than 1,000 men each, as well as food and water for up to 3 months. Mounting his men on these boats, he had sailed further west than any man had ever dared, rounding each of the strongholds and arriving north of Fyr. Then, while the Guion armies were still away from home, their capital was left defenseless.

Technological Level

Clan Jenos were well renowned throughout the West even before they came to power. This was due to one thing: their ship-building.
