Brassworks of Dopralem

Brass is a material so valued in the kingdoms of Xourn that it is doubly comparable to silver ounce for ounce.  Although most metals carry some level of astral conductivity, brass is said to have a profound connection to the mystical flow that separates planar realms.  Most minor magical trinkets or contingents are crafted with brass due to this property, and the practice of making enchanted constructs has been well established in the capitol of Xourn for hundreds of years.  Dopralem prides itself on a regiment of magical advances which has turned it into a metropolis crawling with prototypes, golems, scribes, and an ample workforce to sustain all therein.
One of the largest task producers is the massive brassworks factory built into a wide mountainside ramp that winds up to the city's art district.  Hundreds of stacked makeshift shacks teeter around the perimeter of the building, inhabited by civil small folk able to make their lives by smelting ingots and processing gears, bolts, and plates.  The majority of these laborers are kobolds, many of whom find an intoxicating interest in the hobby of inventing and prefer to be paid in brass bits.  Skilled enchanters can employ entire towers of these denizens on the promise of bringing their toys and gadgets to life.  Thus, the otherwise unkempt slums district sparks its own faux ecology by letting a myriad of polished glitter flies and clockwork geckos roam while their masters toil.
Over time this material has become such a commodity that its uses have been restricted.  Should a prospective commission not suffice in economic value--such as plain dishware or a theater mask--it is denied by the brassworks board of operators.  An individual must showcase that they are able and willing to fit any purchase of brass with an ample source of magic.  Coveting any amount of untempered metal is considered unpatriotic.
