Circle of the Black Grove
A circle of vampiric treant druids who have a take on environmentalism that Ra's al Ghul would love. You've met four of them so far: Thornroot, the sick treant you healed in Barovia (Curing Thornroot--Barovia), and a circle of three in Hazlan: Bloodoak, Witherleaf, and Barrenbranch. Bloodoak is the leader of the treants in Hazlan, although you don't know whether she's the hierophant of the entire circle.
According to Bloodoak, the elder treant whose body has been harvested for parts (she calls him her father, while Thornroot called him his grandfather) was the first treant ever to come to Ravenloft, and every treant there can trace their lineage back to him. He was once their hierophant, but after his death, he became "too unbalanced" and could no longer be a druid.
Emyr was wary of the Circle, considering them more of a corruption of druidism than actual druids, and warned Rose to be the same. Thornroot seemed contemptuous of both Rose and Emyr despite their being druids until Rose healed him, but Bloodoak has treated you with trust and respect.
What Bloodoak has told you of the Circle's plans:
The treants can't use the rune in Sly-Var to affect their magic because it's arcane. When "Grandfather" comes, though, that will change; because his body was used to make arcane magic items, he's infused with arcane magic. The treants can use him as a conduit to channel their magic through the rune and perform an incredibly powerful spell. They're still debating what they want to do, but they only have one chance; even if their spell doesn't destroy the city and the rune along with it, they'll lose the element of surprise once they trigger this spell.
They expect "Grandfather" within the next two days; the objects wouldn't be reacting like this if he weren't close.
Witherleaf wants a more moderate approach; he wants to summon an earthquake that will collapse Sly-Var. Bloodoak eventually revealed that she wants to unleash a plague, since wizards have almost no healing magic to defend themselves from it. She doesn't see the sense in destroying Sly-Var and the rune unless they have a half-decent chance of taking every single wizard in Hazlan with them. She encouraged Rose to make sure that she had cure disease prepared.
