The City's local guard are formed of well trained clan warriors from the O'Feardelain and O'Lyre families and are considered the toughest city guards in the entire Commonwealth. Famously, the crime syndicates of Prima Terra refuse to operate in Ceannastra due to the fierce reputation of these guards.
Industry & Trade
Ceannastra is the second most important trade hub on the Terrasic trade route after Lastlight. As one of the three hub points of the route, Ceannastra's trade economy is diverse and the city gains access to resources from across Prima Terra. Ceannastra itself produces lumber and artesanal goods, specifically oak, birch, and mahogany lumber.
Infrastructure
Ceannastra has a diverse range of infrastructure and construction dating back to the city's Aedrinarian founding. There are three main bridges that cross the River Laren. The oldest being the Northern Road Bridge which was built by the first Aedrinarian settlers. Similiarly there is an old Aedrinarian market square and well found in the Burrows district.
The city has two main docks, a civic and military docks. The military docks are home to the Terrasic fleet and are built in the repurpused Eldrian dockyards. The civilian docks are in the Lamairne district and span the entire northern coastline of the city. a few miles into the bay, the Gallagher Tower lighthouse can be found.
The Northern Road passes directly through the city, going through the two main gates of the city. The southernmost is the Kernow Gate which holds a small memorial to King Duan II. The northern gate, the Winter Gate, is heavily defended and has a small war memorial dedicated to Ceannastrans who fought in the 40 year war.
Districts
Ceannastra is composed of 10 districts. The inner most is sealed behind ballie walls and is known as the Citdael. This houses the elites and military officers of the city alongside the Eldrian built keep which lies on top of the former Aedrinarian fortress. Above the citadel is the Old Town. This district has tightly packed and winding streets with a main crossroads spanning from east to west and then heading down to the citadel.
The eastern districts of Dragonwall, Margadh and Balibeag are the newest, dating back to the 700-800s of the third era. Industrial focuses, these districts house the lumber warehouses and workshops of the city. An area of majority gnomes and halflings, these districts are the artistic hub of the city.
The north-west regions of Lamarine and Arweyl date back to post Aedrinarian settlement and have a diverse and maritime focused economy. Fishing and merchant centres the residents live in tightly packed houses in the Arewyl district. The shoreline is dotted with wharf's and quays for ship docking, building, and maintainance.
On the south of the river, the Bruchfeas and Coisuisce district was largely destroyed during the Ceannastra riots of 992. Home to the military docks, the remannts of old Eldrian manorhouses now shelter museums and barracks with rebuilt homes and shops for the city's natives. The nearby Burrows remain the slums of the city, housing the poor and destitute.
History
Modern Ceannastra was first founded in the second age by Aedrinarian settlers raiding Prima Terra. Evidence of prior Gwenyddian village settlements is mentioned in myth in legend but no large scale permanant settlement has been found. Known as the city of Canvick, the city was the centre of a proud and indepedent Jarldom that was independent until being taken by the kingdom of Kernow.
The city was returned to the Callerick petty kigndom and remained as the largest city of the region for its entire existence. Although never the capital of Callerick, with Palaidcyntaff taking that place, Ceannastra became known as the trade centre of Gwenydd and having a 'tough' reputation for soldiers and sailors.
During the Eldrian Invasion of the 900s in the third age, the old city walls were unable to withstand the Eldrian siege and the city was sacked. Key districts were claimed and rebuilt by the empire, although local resitance remained heavy well throughout the imperial age. From the 970s anti-imperial riots led to the city gaining a special status within the empire, allowing a joint rule of local clans and imperial governors.
The empire still effectively controlled the city and clamped down heavily on Gwenyddian nationalism and culture. In 992, anti-empire riots began in the Bruchfeas district and spread throughout the city with loyalists and nationalists fighting heavily in the streets. The empire struggled to regain control, and were ousted fully during the bloody fortnight when the clans united to oust the imperial forces.
Post-revolution, Ceannastra became the main dockyards on the Terrasic ocean and being relatively unscathed by the revolution, an influx of settlers came in to the city, boosting its population. Ceannastra was officially designated the capital of the Callerick region due to the destruction of Palaidcyntaff.
In the 40 year war, the Eldrian Empire and Seldrinar tried multiple times to take the city but were always repulsed. The Golden Dragon Cain, who the city was named after, did engage in protecting the city during the Battle of Golden Fire. Queen Rhiannon made Ceannastra her base of operations and formed a strong bond with the city's leadership, especially the young naval captain O'Galloigh.
Post-war, Ceannastra used its resources to help rebuild the Commonwealth and the influx of goods from the Terrasic trade route helped to repair the Commonwealth economy. The city's motto was officially changed to "Never bent, never broken" and granted the royal privillage from Queen Rhiannon for their role in resisting Seldrinar and Eldrian invasions.
in 1052, the city's docks were attacked by the Cult of Dagon who were searching for Azura. The now Admiral O'Galloigh turned up with frigates and galleons from the Terrasic fleet and destroyed the cult's ghost ship.
