First, it was accidentally, it was simply more efficient to battle those wererats with the help of those softskins, but the aftermath of the battle really surprised him...
They were calling him a hero, and they feed him, meat, vegetables, but not raw, they were cooked, they were cooked in delicious ways.
That's when he realized that even though fighting for these softskins were kind of dangerous, it had great rewards, and besides, living and fighting in the Black Marsh was much more dangerous. So, an easy job here and there would keep Varg's living a nice a good feed life.
Varg grew in reputation in the lands near the Black Marsh and Varg just started to travel among the softskins lands, first, there was always suspicion, but Varg's reputation would always help things.

Personal history
Varg learned to fight with Melkor a softskin human, that was accompanying another softskin human that lived quite a few moons in the settlement in the Black Marsh near Dunnum, they would venture into the Marsh during the morning, a return sometime after the high sun.
Melkor would fight without any armor, and he didn't have the hard scales that lizardfolk had, Varg always thought that someday they would not return whole. But Melkor told young Varg that he keeps the dangers at bay by battle them from reach using his spear. Melkor teaches Varg relentlessly with the spear, to the point it had become an extension of Varg's body.
The other human didn't fight with weapons, it used strange powers that were quite simple beyond Varg, so he focused on his weapon training with Melkor.
